Special to The Newss from New York April 2 4 reports Will Herrick a fine jolly humorous man plans a publicity idea to aid preachers by publishing their pictures weekly to draw churchgoers. He recalls a Paris embassy tea with American tourists and wine afterward.
In Lawrence County, mild spring warmth followed by last night’s freezing temperatures is raising concerns for fruit crops. Gale winds shredded garbage cans and knocked out radio aerials while high school athletes trained for spring workouts at Boyles field. New Castle school board plans a sizable athletic field at George Washington Junior High, purchased with room for various games and minimal cost.
Charles I Tuttle Ohio Representative Willian MM Morgan, accused of bringing liquor into New York from Panama aboard the Cristo Bal, faced a clean bill from customs officers after eight inspectors questioned the case. Tuttle’s statement said no bottles were found, sparking belief the charges may falter, with the matter reduced to talk.
Members of what was formerly Company 125th Mounted Engineers were sworn in as Troop F, 103rd Pennsylvania Cavalry, by visiting U S Army officers at the Armory on Neshennock avenue. Harrisburg April 2 The House passed Rep Sterling Philadelphia bill imposing a 3 cent permanent phase line tax and a temporary 1 cent tax for one year by 125 to 73. Senate prepares hearings while four cent gasoline tax looms and coal tax is reviewed amid likely debates.
In North Scranton two men, Dominick Curcio 32 and neighbor Nicholas Yanni 24, were killed in a pistol and knife duel. Curcio died of heart wounds, Yanni with 11 stab wounds, both found on the sidewalk near Curcio’s home after an argument escalated to violence.
Washington announces that New Castle will host the eighteenth district census operations for Pennsylvania in 1930. The division includes Lawrence Beaver and Butter counties with 31 districts overall and Pittsburgh as supervisory HQ. Mercer County centers at Sharon. other counties listed include Elk Forest Venango and Warren.
A police call reported a gang of rowdies throwing stones through windows at Slavish Hall on Chartes and South Jefferson streets. Officers Golis Leteva and Constable A. Leslie pursued the group, believed to be the responsible party.
Mexican rebel aviator dropped three to four bombs near Naco Arizona causing damage on the American side of the border. One American was wounded and a landing on the border suffered damage. The targets included a drug company building housing offices and a local post office.
