Reagan Veto Stands as Senate Fails to Override
Washington UPI The Senate failed to override President Reagan's veto of an 88 million highway bill by a 65-35 vote after two hours of debate. The measure would have allowed states to raise rural interstate speed limits to 65 mph and included 499 million for Pennsylvania highway construction and 13.4 million for the mid-valley expressway segment from Conway to the Turnpike and Interstate 79 in Butler County. The House had already overridden the veto 350-73.

In Bergen County New Jersey a judge stripped surrogate Mary Beth Whitehead of parental rights and awarded custody to William Stern and his wife Elizabeth who adopted Baby M in court. Midland man Auburn Hudson 39 faced a rash morning mishap after a newspaper contained a live bird. He released the bird, fell from his car without a seat belt, and the car rolled into a neighbor’s house. His pants fell apart during the chase, he was treated for minor injuries and released.
