Firemen receive public praise for stopping a blaze at the St. Cloud building that leveled the structure and its G C Murphy store. Fire crews worked over 15 hours from 12 30 a m to after 4 p m, with Chief McIlwain and Assistant Chief Dart staying to recover Mrs McKibben and her foster daughter.
Charred remains of Mrs. Louise McKibben and her foster daughter Martha were found in debris by city workers after a fire. Identified by a friend from the St. Cloud building, the pair were found hours apart in the ruins and prepared for final disposition at the mortuary.
In the 47 year old St. Cloud Hotel blast, seven women occupied rooms. two were slightly injured and all escaped. Mrs Jennie Tyler, formerly Jennie Myers, recalls the boiler explosion tearing through rooms and ceiling. Survivors include Miss Effie Wilson Mrs Anna McCown and Erma Wymer who lost possessions but remain alive. Fire debris removal disrupted street traffic and interrupted a local brokerage firm’s wire service briefly.
U S weather reports show the maximum temperature at 51 and minimum at 24 with trace frost. River stage stands at 57 feet. A year ago the high was 40 and the low 28 with no precipitation.
Police grill Joseph Gedeon over the Easter Sunday killings of his wife and daughter and a lodger. Detectives press his alibi as they seek the whereabouts of his suit and hat linked to the crime scene. Gedeon, held in custody, admits the worn suit differs from the Saturday attire.
Theresa Ludwig, 45, held in Steubenville custody for questioning in the Rose Cable murder, is released in Canton under a $1,000 bond after pleading not guilty to a technical charge. Her attorney says she will be available for further questioning. Rose Cable’s contractor-husband previously admitted renting an Akron apartment for over two years.
President Roosevelt told congressmen he supported extending the Public Works Administration for two more years but would object to a fresh appropriation of 300 million dollars. An unofficial committee led by Rep. Alfred Beiter urged rapid funding for nearly 3,000 approved projects demanding 398.6 million in grants and 110 million in loans, with 155 million available.

Harrisburg April 1 The 132nd legislature removed the Republican controlled public service commission and delayed a new public utilities commission. Gov Earle sent three appointees D J Driscoll Richard Beamish and Thomas Buchanan for confirmation two more names will be presented Monday night. The dismissed commissioners include C Jay Goodnough Ray Shelby Frederick Gruenberg P Stephen Stahlecker Herman J Goldberg and Thomas C Egan.
Three children, sisters Charlotte Mann aged 8 Theresa Mann aged 4 and brother James Mann aged 5, drowned when they broke through thin ice at Vale cemetery pond on the outskirts of Schenectady New York. They were children of Mr and Mrs Henry J Mann.
City officials hear spokesmen including J. F. Perelman Ivor Davis Edward J. Davis and M. A. Mulcahy urge restoring wages for city employees who faced reductions. Council and workers representatives plan further talks as Mayor Mc Grath notes the funding challenge. Davis advocates a municipal golf and park system amid rising living costs. Sharon Pa April 1 death claims three residents in Mercer County. Herman Jennings 27 of Sharpsville died in hospital from burns suffered March 8 when a heater in a crane ignited his clothing. Darrell Kepler 44 inventor of a motion picture safety device collapsed at the wheel of his car after illness at a theatre. J Martin longtime Pro tected Home Society director died at his Jamestown New York home.
Eastern operator predicts agreement as wage negotiations reach a critical hour. Both sides appear deadlocked in what the paper calls the eleventh hour parley, with a conference spanning current terms and future raises unresolved.
An unnamed prominent coal operator predicted a settlement in the wage conferences with the United Mine Workers this afternoon. John L. Lewis had stated operators rejected their sub committee report as the midnight contract deadline neared, while the operator said only an extension for further consideration was sought.
A head on crash southwest of Punxsutawney Pa killed R W Hamilton 50 and Clair Rummel 29 and left Harold Roney 17 near death. Homer Hamilton 19 John Cochran 29 and Cyrus E Rummel 35 were seriously injured as both cars were demolished.

About 700000 gallons of water were used by fire departments Wednesday to battle the St Cloud building fire. New Castle Water Company superintendent J L Matthews notes the reservoir was 20 feet deep and the water used represented only six inches of storage. He credits Fire Chief Richard McIlwain and his men for saving adjoining buildings and praises the fire crew’s work.
New York April 1 The nation's six best women cooks welcomed by Mayor La Guardia. Official national cooking champion 1937 is Mrs Helen P Angell of 835 South Ohio Ave Columbus Ohio, who won first prize of 500 dollars.
Mercer April 1 Coroner's jury exonerated George Lawrence New York state trooper of responsibility for the death of Henry Coryea 76 Springfield township who was fatally injured when hit by Lawrence s auto five miles south of Mercer on the Perry highway March 18 Coryea died March 29 in Mercer hospital from his injuries.
There will be no automobile parking charge at Cascade Park this summer after city council approved park commissioners plans for 1987. Parks Director Alexander submitted to WPA projects for a new kitchen in the grove and new rest rooms.
G C Murphy Company will open in temporary quarters after a management conference. Plans to return to Washington Street with a larger store were announced as executives arrange relocation and staffing. The old St Cloud Building site is leased long term, blocking theatre groups from the lot.
Work to remove the last fire ruined walls and the elevator shaft at the St. Cloud building on Washington Street paused after a setback. A planned dynamite blast to topple the shaft was halted due to questions of compensation and liability. officials debated actions as of noon.
Two additional victims of the disastrous fire were located today. Paul Morrison of Union township, a former Union high school athlete, suffered a head wound requiring six stitches. Ralph Coates of North Mill Street also sustained a head laceration needing seven stitches. Both were across the street from the fire when glass fragments struck them. They were dazed by the blast but are recovering.
