A flood of testimonials extols Peruna as a spring tonic easing lingering colds and catarrh. Readers from St. Louis St Joseph West Manchester and Atlanta credit Peruna with restored energy sleep relief and improved digestion after months of illness.
New York May 23 The National Association of Manufacturers by formal vote backed tariff revision at the earliest opportunity and more reciprocity treaties. About 60 percent favored immediate revision from a 6,000-member poll, 20 percent were hands off, 8 percent thought revision premature, and 7 percent indifferent. Additional resolutions endorsed open shop, industrial education, coastal service improvements, and opposition to illegal combinations. A $1,590,000 education campaign on dictatorial combinations was authorized, with leaders pledging to oppose oppression by capital or labor and to defend public officials and law. Captain Henry A. Castle criticized postal reform management. Charles A. Prouty urged government control of railroad capital accounts. James W. VanCleave was re-elected St. Louis president, and E. Sillman of New York treasurer.
Pat Crowe was acquitted by a district court jury of holding up two city streetcars about two years ago and robbing the crews. This disposes of the last criminal charge against Crowe.
The Interstate Commerce Commission intends to press to compel Harriman to answer inquiries from the New York investigation. Court action in New York next month could force him to testify, with possible appeals to higher courts and even the Supreme Court, while the commission weighs the broader Harriman lines inquiry and awaits the Standard Oil arguments in St. Paul. A commission report on Harriman is expected publicly before a final ruling, with further proceedings anticipated in a few weeks. Hawley Wilt Open Reise Cite. May 10.
The National League results show New York leading with wins at 7 and 6 spots, while St Louis and Philadelphia post varied scores. American League play includes Detroit and Philadelphia, with Cleveland over Washington, and Louisville defeating Columbus in a series across several cities.
In Columbus on May 25 the Presbyterian general assembly voted unanimously to back the American Anti-Saloon League as a safe and sane temperance ally. It declared the permanent temperance committee must not engage in political work and promised full cooperation within church rules.
Chicago May 23 Wheat surged amid bullish demand on the board of trade. July, September, and December contracts set new season highs with initial gains of 14 to 14 1 4 cents, while closing quotes showed only small changes. Heavy buying by commission houses and later selling pushed prices within a tight 2 cent range as rain absence in Kansas and firm European markets supported the run.
