Chicago May 4 riot conditions worsen with business leaders urging state troops. Governor Deneen pressed by Employers' Association while unions seek a voice at the capital. Police claim control yet mobs attack non union workers and strike breakers.
Mrs. J. E. Finn of Buffalo shares how a long illness forced rest, and after trying Peruna Medicine Co. tonic from Columbus she claims rapid recovery. She notes improved health after two months and ongoing use when fatigued, with free advice offered by Dr. Hartman.
A clash left a score of men injured and hospitalized as strike breakers were beaten near the Montgomery Ward & Co. plant. One injured superintendent T. C. Carlson faced possible death.
A delegation from Illinois and Chicago labor federations met Governor Deneen in Springfield on May 4 to present Chicago federation resolutions urging a halt on troop deployment until an on site inquiry. They offer arbitration by the state board or a mutually agreed committee. The governor said no troop request had been made and advised the sheriff to initiate any such appeal. He is monitoring Chicago developments closely.

Amos Spur geon of Hillisburg is jailed in Frankfort for attempting to wreck a west bound Lake Erie and Western passenger train near Hillisburg. The engineer spotted ties on the track in time to stop the train. Spurgeon disappeared after the incident but was later arrested by the railroad detective. He denies the charge.
A. B. Spear cashier of Citizens' bank Oberlin Ohio pleaded guilty in U S district court to one count of making false entries. Judge Taylor sentenced him to seven years in the Ohio penitentiary as the bank failed due to loans to Mrs Cassie Chadwick.
A mass meeting at the Academy of Music heard Rob ert Dornan swear an affidavit alleging bribery in the 1897 lease of the city gas works to United Gas Improvement company. The Ridgeway syndicate allegedly paid 10 000 to withdraw its bid, with Dornan and a friend declining shares. Resolutions denouncing the lease and naming a nine member investigation committee were adopted.
Indiana statistics show 4436 deaths from consumption in 1904 up from 4035 in 1903 with 1816 male and 2620 female deaths. Among females 1001 were aged 18 to 40, while 538 male deaths were in that range. Orphans numbered 2801 under twelve, and 1416 homes were made fatherless or motherless. Direct cash loss valued at 4,436,000 plus 1,330,800 for lost work and care totals 5,796,800, not including indirect costs to state for insanity, pauperism and crime.
Marion Indiana May 4 The jury found Mrs Jennie Roode not guilty after a ten hour deliberation with twenty five ballots cast She was accused of trying to murder her civil war pensioner husband John K Roode by poisoning his breakfast cake The defense said he planted the poison to frame her and the state argued she sought the death to gain as heir She is 42 and he 78 and she left for Elwood after the verdict.
Mishawaka Indiana May 4 William H Hamilton arrested three weeks earlier on a bigamy charge and taken to Kalama zoo where he had another wife living has been sentenced to one year confinement in the house of correction at Ionia. The young wife who lived with Hamilton accompanied him to Michigan City for the trial and after sentencing said in court I shall meet you at the prison gates when your term expires for I love you and believe you to be innocent.
Margaret Shoemaker sues Jacob Striffing a Columbia City dry goods merchant for 5000 dollars alleging he escorted her to a rear room accused her of shoplifting and forced her to pay five dollars to avoid public exposure. She is sixty a well known resident and alleges public denunciation in the presence of onlookers.
Wabash Ind May 4 Judge Plummer overruled Sprong's motion for a new trial in the murder of Wilson Addington and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Sprong said he wished to begin serving immediately and will be taken to Michigan City Monday.

Governor Hanly and a southeastern Indiana hospital tour visit towns offering site claims and rail facilities in Bedford Columbus Seymour North Vernon New Albany Madison with emphasis on railroad access and productive soil. Revenue collector Bonnell notes Secretary of State candidate Fred Sims appears set for an acclamation with party leaders seeking reward for long service.

A mob attacked a delivery wagon driver Sidney Chambers after a riot on Harrison and Besplaires streets. Police officers Sharkey and Kelly were injured as bricks, stones and bottles flew. Chambers collapsed on the riverbank coal pile and later died at the county hospital.
Henry G. Gell, cashier at First National Bank of Milwaukee, was arrested at the Lakota hotel in Chicago after four days there, registered as A C Smith. He was quickly taken back to Milwaukee. The International Railroad Congress remained in session in Washington.
