Governor Gooding denies reports he planned to place Ada County under martial law at the Haywood murder trial. He says martial law would only occur if disturbances made it necessary and he does not expect any breach of peace by Idaho residents.
More than 140 people were penned in a burning building at 255 Wabash avenue and narrowly escaped with their lives. About eighty occupants, mainly women, were trapped at a rear fire escape and many fell or were pushed from the window to the alley below as firefighters and neighbors aided the rescue. Damages are estimated at 50000 dollars.
Evansville announces the Southern Indiana Memorial association midsummer meeting to be held May 22 to 25 in Evansville with a banquet by local newspaper fraternity. Petersburg Indiana May 2 Henry Grubb beat his wife with a fence picker leaving her insensible. He was fined 25 dollars plus costs and sentenced to thirty days in jail.
New York May 2 Miss Mabelle Gillman arrived from Paris on the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and spoke of a reported marriage to William Be Corey president of United States Steel. She did not confirm details but hinted plans in the city with both families present. An interrupted honeymoon accompanies the brief glance at personal affairs amid curiosity.
In New York on May 2 a witness for Mrs Anisia Louise De Massy the baroness on trial for Gustav Simon's murder testified that an unknown woman was ushered into the room as De Massy prepared to leave. De Massy said she was arrested at the curb after leaving Simon's office and denied shooting him. A policeman later denied the threatening remark.
More than 6 000 Socialists and labor unionists in Brooklyn and Manhattan paraded in red and American flags with buttons and banners honoring Moyer Haywood and Pettibone, charged in Governor Steunenburgs murder. A Congress Hall meeting and Union Square addresses followed urging sympathy and attacking the national administration. About 5 000 listeners attended the speeches.
