Indianapolis reports the former president Benjamin Harrison died at his residence at 4 45 PM surrounded by family and friends. Doctors and aides named included lifelong friend Dr W H H Miller and secretary D M Ransdell as memories and tributes poured in from relatives and public figures across the nation.
An advertisement extols Hood s Sarsaparilla as a purifier of impure blood claiming it cures boils pimples salt rheum and other virulent diseases. It asserts the medicine’s proven powers and cites vast consumer belief and pharmacist acknowledgment in aiding numerous health conditions.
The text recounts a public figure from Indiana who ran for governor unsuccessfully, joined the Mississippi river commission as a civilian member in 1879, served as U S senator from Indiana from 1881 to 1887, became U S president in 1888 and was renominated in 1892 but defeated. During his term his wife died. He returned to Indianapolis in 1893 to practice law and married Mrs. Mary Dimonick in 1896.
Terre Haute reports rising anger over killings after the stabbing of Miss June Lee by Ray Herbert, Vandalia brakeman, in a suburban resort wire room. Herbert, bound over in 500 dollars, allegedly quarreled with her over jealousy and fled but was later captured. the wound was near the left breast with a pocketknife, not requiring city hospital transfer.
A track walker near North Vernon Indiana found a well dressed man dead on the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern line about two miles east of town. The initials F R L matched Gate City lodge No 78 K of P roster from Atlanta and Kolb's hotel Cincinnati key was found. Police suspect he fell from the Louisville express and was later struck by a westbound train.
In Rushville Indiana on March 14 Mrs James Goodbar watched two year old Mary choke while eating cooked beans. A bean lodged in the trachea and despite Dr Dillon’s attempt to cut the windpipe the child could not be saved.
More than 20 000 Filipinos took the oath of allegiance to the United States last week. Lt John L Lines with Company K, 2d United States Infantry, met insurgents south of Buena Vista, Marinduque Island, one American killed and three wounded. Insurgents suffered six killed and 13 wounded. A combined drive against the insurgents continues on Marinduque Island with expeditions abroad. A detachment of the 46th Volunteer Infantry captured five rebel officers and 30 men with 47 rifles near Indang Cavite. Colonel Robert I Bullard of the 39th Volunteer Infantry reported surrender of insurgent Colonel Bopen with two officers, 53 men and 29 rifles at Batayan Batangas. Lt Thomas L Sherburne of the 33d Volunteer Infantry and native auxiliaries defeated a unit of insurgents.
Major Carey of the 42d Volunteer Infantry seized one insurgent officer and two brass cannons near Mo Rong. Major Elmore F. Taggart of the 28th Volunteer Infantry captured about 23 miles south of Cagayan several cabinet members including Anselmo Abejechuca and Fausto Plodo, along with four others.
Mrs Chris tina Shrisplin of Jasper county sues Warren circuit court for 25000 alleging John F Judy promoter of the Judy system money lending caused loss and injury after Samuel Hunter attempted foreclosure and seized harness not in mortgage. She claims she was thrown and disabled. Judy described as one of the county's wealthiest men.
The Wabash Street Methodist church congregation, formed three years ago after separating from the First M E church over site disputes, plans a handsome new building at the corner of Wabash and Stitt streets this summer with a cost limit of 13000 dollars.
The body of L William Beatty arrived in Logansport Ind from Metropolitan Michigan after an examination found a bullet hole in the side suggesting death by own action. Police continued inquiries into the case.
The note states no powder marks on the wound and that John Beatty the father cannot obtain details. An investigation will be conducted as foul play is feared despite the man being in good health and cheerful.
Jeffersonville Ind March 14 Frank Montague charged with the murder of William Gillmore last December was acquitted in the circuit court without jury deliberation. Six witnesses were called but none testified to prove Montague killed Gillmore and placed his body on a railroad to be mangled by a train. The defense offered no testimony and the jury was instructed to render a verdict of not guilty.
J H Letcher editor of the Warren Review was robbed by footpads in Chicago while en route to the Illinois Central depot. He returned home with a black eye and a scratched neck as testament to the encounter.
Goshen Indictment alleges Fuller J. Woodward signed the name of Francis L. Davis to an assignment for pay. The Elkhart businessman posted a $1,000 bond.
Washington March 14 James Cosco Hampton a 15 year old farmer's son from Daviess county stole 122 dollars from his father's desk and ran away. He was traced to St. Louis where he was arrested. The youth had bought clothes and had 54.80 remaining when caught.
Two letters from Andrew Carnegie reveal his retirement from active business life and a donation of 5 million dollars to endow a fund for superannuated and disabled Carnegie employees. The gift surpasses prior benefactions and will not affect the existing savings fund, which holds nearly 2 million dollars and provides loans for workers to buy homes.
