Death Designs on Harriman’s Road Hazard
On July 7 Frank McMurtrie, a teamster on the Harriman estate, found a dynamite cartridge hanging from a tree above the road center near Arden House. The blast device, 200 yards from the depot by Mamapo bridge, could explode if struck by an automobile. McMurtrie alerted Samuel VanTassell, who removed the cap and threw the cartridge into the river. The Harriman superintendent and Chief Bush launched an investigation.
