Japanese official circles doubt Port Arthur’s fall will alter the war and say the conflict remains a purely military affair. They expect renewed Russian effort under Kuropatkin and the Russian Pacific squadron to force Oyama back and gain sea supremacy. Peace talk is deemed futile.
Reports from St. Petersburg indicate Rozestvensky will not head for Vladivostok immediately. He plans to wait for the third Pacific squadron, now under construction, with several ships due late January. He may base at uninhabited Polynesian reefs or Madagascar if withdrawn.

A classic late 19th century health claim describes an elderly pastor cured by Peruna. It asserts mucous membrane thickening causes hearing smell and taste loss and digestive issues, and that Peruna acts on all mucous membranes to restore function. Mrs Cas ie L Chadwick claims a formal financial statement is in possession of a private party in New York City and will not be released to the public without her consent She says the statement would clear her and her husband of wrongdoing and prove they were victims of circumstances not crime.
Andrew Carnegie agreed to donate 10,000 toward a library building in Rochester Indiana if the city council provides a 1,000 annual maintenance fund and furnishes a site. The council promptly met the conditions.
Jan 4 report from Cherno details siege statistics for Port Arthur. Russian torpedo boat destroyers delivered records of General Stoessel and the fortress defense, with 8 000 troops able to fight and 2 000 unable to, 11 000 killed, 16 000 wounded or sick, 265 percent of the garrison put out of action, and Japan’s cost estimated at 100 million dollars.
Tokio reports Port Arthur remains orderly with 35 000 residents including 25 000 soldiers or sailors. About 20 000 are sick or wounded. Provisions and bread are plentiful but meat and vegetables scarce. No medical supplies exist. Japanese assist the people and capitulation committees push their work.
Chefoo reports two hundred Japanese prisoners found at Port Arthur. Many had taken part in blocking the channel and were believed dead until now.
The sixty fourth biennial Indiana General Assembly convened in Indianapolis with usual ceremonies. The session ran short as the governor deferred reading his message until tomorrow. House Speaker Cantwell named elections committee to review contests from Allen and Jefferson counties, including the Cravens seat.
Robbert Macy, five, street East hill in Wabash Indiana, coasted toward the railway crossing as a yard engine shunted cars. The sled hit the tracks, a freight car caught him, and he died instantly from severe injuries.
George Diefenbach Jr. died from a stab wound received at a dance four months earlier in Hvaneville Indiana. He had lain in a stupor for three weeks as typhoid felled three other family members during the long illness. The family was prominent in the rural area near the city.
In New York on January 4 a determined effort to secureNan Patterson's release on bail from the Tombs prison continues. She is accused of the murder of Caesar Young and supporters press for bail while awaiting trial.
Edward Harley and William Shackleford were sentenced to prison in Brazil Indiana for burglary.
Secretary Hay states that East Africa colonization by American Jews will not discredit Americanism or patriotism. Israel Zangwill told Hay of concerns that Zionist-linked colonization might harm citizenship. Hay's public stance aims to remove this obstacle as the Zionist society plans for 60,000 to 70,000 migrants yearly to East Africa.
Herbert Stevens, returning student from Wabash College, was saved after an hour by Henry Mucker and John Barr who formed a human chain from a bridge to reach him when Bel River ice cracked. A second item reports Richard Garland jailed for pocketbook theft of $50 from Mrs Luke Reynolds. A third notes Monroe County oil prospecting excitement with two firms starting surveys.

Governor elect Hanly and lieutenant governor elect Miller shape committee selections to prevent overrun in appropriations, while Rep.
