Washington January 2. President Roosevelts first public New Year reception drew 8100 attendees, the largest in years, with gates kept open until every applicant had a chance to greet the president. Mrs Roosevelt appeared charming in white silk as Alice Roosevelt and friends joined the event.
Washington January 2 diplomats kept late hours and welcomed many callers. The Chinese minister Wu welcomed guests at the legation on Q street with tea, while Japan's Minister Takahira celebrated as back home. The Korean legation also marked New Year with a dinner attended by men only.
President Dias greeted thousands of callers in Mexico City on January 2 including the diplomatic corps Pan American delegates congress members and military officers. He was in good health and unusually cordial to Pan American envoys as the day opened.
A report states that yesterday the receipt and redemption of preferred stock were reprieved. Upward of 60 million dollars of the 75 million dollar issue was received paid for and canceled.
The Chinese court arrived at Chen Ting Fu last Tuesday and will proceed to Pekin by rail next Friday. The journey advances as officials plan the route and timetable for the next segment.
Pittsburg Jan 2 A through passenger train on the Baltimore and Ohio jumped the track on a steep grade near Glencoe. Two engine men died and 17 were injured, five seriously. Victims were rushed to Meyersdale as a relief train from Cumberland reached the scene. The fully vestibuled train burned after gas tanks exploded, with rescue work fast to reach the injured.
Havana January 2 indications show the entire Palma ticket will win and Thomas Estrada Palma will receive the unanimous vote of Cuba's electoral college. General Bartolome Maso supporters expect a practical withdrawal and a formal ballot result.
Lieutenant Charles D. Rhodes of the Sixth Cavalry and two orderlies engaged twenty armed insurgents in a cuartel near Manila. Rhodes feigned retreat then attacked the fort, captured two rifles and three revolvers, burned the barracks, and moved on. Orlando Lester testified at the Oxford trial that he held a lamp while Will Mathis shot Hugh Montgomery with a shotgun. He said Mathis sent him for the guns and Whit Owens loaded the weapon. The United States stays neutral and will not sign but allows others to report a plan, while declining active involvement.
Constantinople January 2 reports that at the British representative's urging the foreign embassies in the city are drafting a collective note protesting the levying of Salonica quay dues without prior powers approval. Pretoria January 2 notes two intelligence officers sent to parley with Boers who desired.
A Michigan division Big Four engine struck a buggy eight miles north of Wabash Indiana. Jacob Trick, his daughter Miss Trick, and Mrs. Kelly were riding home from Urbana. Miss Trick and Mr Trick died from injuries. Mrs Kelly was badly but not fatally hurt. The buggy top lodged on the engine pilot.
In Crawfordsville Indiana January 2 a mysterious cattle disease killing many animals has ranchers blaming cornstalks or powerful poison. Some cattle die after short grazing despite overfeeding claims. Blackleg also claims victims and some farmers vaccinate as a precaution.
A Black man named Hensley was killed by a crowd of miners at Island 8 near Linton Indiana after a quarrel. He was beaten and then returned threatening to shoot. Ten miners fired eight to ten bullets, killing him instantly. arrests are not expected.

In Anderson Indiana on January 2 Mrs Elle Havelin was pumping water when the platform broke causing a 15 foot fall into eight feet of water. Her 16 year old son rescued her, holding her head above water until help arrived. She suffered broken hip and ribs and may not survive the shock.
Real estate men in Indianapolis assess 1901 as a strong year with total transfers reaching about 13.1 million dollars. Comparisons show 1900 at roughly 9.06 million and the prior year at about 9.51 million, indicating continued growth in property activity.

Madison Wisconsin January 2 fatal accident marred a feet out race on Lake Monona when a boat veered into a crowd of spectators fatally injuring John A Fiscus a butcher and seriously injuring Colbert Sullivan and W Spencer among the injured were two young boys The incident followed a sudden crash as boats crowded the lakeside course.
Texarkana Arkansas January 2 A fire wiped out the town of Foremar twenty miles north on the Arkansas and Choctaw railway yesterday. Losses totaled 32500 with most insured. The fire was of incendiary origin.
