Secretary Hay received President Castro's reply to the mediation proposal for the Venezuelan crisis. Castro accepts general principles, with details to be shared with London Berlin and Rome. Publication is unlikely before Allied powers review, and no immediate final settlement is expected.
General Matos, leader of the anti Castro movement, discusses Venezuela's debt to foreigners and injuries claims. He insists both debts and claims must be paid and governed by Venezuela's laws, treaties, and international law to uphold national honor.
Caracas reports the German cruiser Falke cannot enter Lake Maracaibo and could not bomb the city. Postmaster denies withheld mail of German merchants. Maracaibo remains quiet while the blockade damages commerce, especially American interests.
At La Guayra on January 1 an Italian cruiser pursued a large Venezuelan schooner near the port. The chase occurred under darkness and the schooner escaped before dawn, with the incident witnessed from the port.
Springfield reports Dr. E M Mills announced at Trinity church that the Twentieth Century Thank Offering drive has surpassed 20 million dollars. He cited 9 million for church debts, 8.15 million for Methodist colleges and schools, 2.75 million for charities, 600 thousand for the permanent conference claimants fund, and about 280 thousand for building churches in destitute communities.
Hearings before United States Commissioner Anderson continued on January 1 in San Juan Puerto Rico. Lieutenant Commander Mentz was held for trial in $1,000 bail. Benjamin Butler was discharged in one case. In a second case Mentz Butler and Brennan were discharged while the commissioner remained undecided about Mentz. The third Butler case also continued.
Ed Hines, a man wanted on murder charges, barricaded himself in a cabin near Deeson, Mississippi, yesterday afternoon and, after a pitched battle with officers, was killed.
Twenty one New York residents sue the Erie and Pennsylvania Coal company for 501,000 each, claiming they were lured to Hoboken and forced to act as strike breakers in Pennsylvania during the coal strike. They allege coercion and threats, with escapes on the return trip, and say grand jury action is being considered. An Erie official denies knowledge of any complaint and asserts the companies did nothing unlawful.
Grimes Aikeen, an Indian schoolboy and football player, testified before a coroner's jury that he killed Paul Lorenz after drinking whisky with Lorenz and William Ross. He said the shooting was accidental as he fired his revolver while riding, then dragged Lorenz's body to a gulch by a rope tied to the saddlehorn. Aikeen was held to the grand jury.
In Connellsville Pennsylvania on January 1 fifteen thousand miners and coke workers in the Connellsville region receive a ten percent wage advance as a New Year gift. Independent concerns join the move following an example set by the H Co Frick Coke Co with a similar scale to take effect across the coking country at the start of the year.
Andrew Carnegie has donated 250000 dollars to New Orleans for a main library building and three branches. The city will provide the sites and commit 25000 dollars annually for support, marking a significant New Year gift.
In Memphis on January 1 the Tick Bite suit brought by the widow of Joel G Webb against two insurance firms for 5000 dollars each was settled as the companies agreed to pay 6000 dollars jointly. Webb died within eighty four hours after a tick bite at his Arkansas plantation. The insurers had denied payment arguing a natural death. Secretary Root sustains Governor Taft in deciding that civil courts must settle the Catholic schism involving Agilpay and the possession of church property in the Philippines. The ruling affects title that may be transferred to the United States if ongoing negotiations with Monsignor Guido succeed.
Relatives in Noblesville Indiana fear body theft after graves are opened in several Hamilton county cemeteries. Eagletown reports some graves opened with no bodies missing while Union Arcadia and Beaver cemeteries report stolen bodies. The sheriff holds two warrants for a man charged with stealing two bodies but papers are not served.

Houston firemen notify mayor of a work stoppage lasting forty eight hours at no pay. About seventy three firefighters are affected including officials as a union demand for higher wages prompts a special city council session to review possible partial increases.
Columbus Indiana January 1 a man who gave the name Thomas Edward obtained a 50 cent money order at the post office payable to Edward Goodman of Bowling Green Ohio The order was later raised to 25 and cashed at New Albany police seek the man who altered it and cashed the funds The case involves identity and fraud across multiple towns and a succession of checks and dates
Hot Springs Arkansas reports Joe Kinney died from injuries from the Turf Exchange explosion on Christmas Eve. The toll rises as new injuries emerge, with over sixty people affected and two more in serious condition. R C Chambers of the Canadian racing circuit fame is said to be out of danger.
