New Orleans health authorities report rising fever deaths but urge calm, noting most victims are Italians and many in or near the emergency hospital. Officials cite hot, wet weather aiding fatalities while stressing continued vigilance and sanitary campaigns to stamp out the outbreak.
In Shreveport Louisiana on August 3 only the Vicksburg Shreveport Pacific and Cotton Belt railroads carried passengers out, bound for Tennessee and the Carolinas or Missouri and beyond. Southbound trains were stopped twenty miles from the parish line, stranding travelers in two sleepers and two coaches while the engine and mail cars were fumigated and allowed into the city.
Cairo Aug 3 The Illinois quarantine extends south of the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern line from St Louis to Vincennes Indiana. The fever infected area includes Duvios south of the railroad and officials declare it a restricted zone as a precautionary measure.

Carmi Illinois August 2 identification confirms the dead man found in a deserted pasture is William Jones a 67 year old farmer missing since July 22. He had a halter strap around his neck and carried $500 and a gold watch when last seen in a buggy with two unknown men. No money remained on his body. The case points to foul play as investigators pursue leads from the buggy sighting.
Portland Indiana August 3 Prosecutor Wheat issues warrant charging Thomas Murphy a farmer with attempt to murder William Keener after an altercation on a public road. Murphy allegedly dragged Keener from his home and aimed a gun at his chest. Mrs Keener intervened and was grazed by a discharged bullet. A prior peace bond was set before Wheat ordered Murphy rearrest.
Frances Mary Kruse, who vanished from Lafayette Indiana on March 17, reappeared in a letter from a Belgian sister stating she is safe and living in Belgium. She said she worked to New York, earned passage money, and arrived aboard a recent ocean steamer. The case had prompted dragging the river and police alerts across the West. The Kruse family, fearing suicide, now rejoices at her safe location.
Logansport Indiana August 3. Bids to furnish Cass County voting machines estimate installation costs between fifteen thousand and seventeen thousand five hundred dollars. One bidder offered twenty five machines at six hundred dollars each another at seven hundred dollars each. County treasury strains raise doubt about ordering the purchase now.
In Lafayette Indiana on August 3 two boys swimming in Wildcat creek five miles east of the city spotted a burning bridge on the Wabash railroad and flagged the Continental Limited. The bridge framework was fully ablaze when the fast train arrived, preventing a wreck.

Carmi Illinois August 3 sheriff Connery of White county arrested Luther Gilliham near Centeraville and jailed him on a murder charge in the death of William Jones. Jones vanished July 22 with $200 and a gold watch on his person. His body was found with a hatter strap tied to a sapling suggesting a staged suicide before the murderers fled.
A Maysville Kentucky company shipped twenty five dozen three month old bronze turkeys to a Portsmouth New Hampshire firm. The letter says the birds are for dinners to be served to the Japan Russian peace commissioners during their visit.
Verse telegrams report Prohibitionists in Ohio nominate Aaron S Watkins for governor. Other items note a Royal Illinois bank safe blown for $4,000, Yaqui-Mexico peace talks, William supports Charles for Norway throne, Mexico Yellow Fever cases, meat industry merger, Independence Kentucky fire damage $20,000, isthmus yellow fever, and last gasage July 28.
Washington Aug 3 L P Holman of Peru Indiana an attorney has been disbarred from practice before the interior department including the pension bureau for attempting to forge a juror of a pension voucher. He was indicted on the offense according to evidence in the department.
A naval squadron arrived last night consisting of eight cruisers and torpedo boats at the harbor. Local authorities await inspection and reconnaissance as the ships make a brief port call.
