A burglar entered Mrs. Sarah Friend’s home at 21 West Market on May 22 taking 56 cents and rifling rooms. He then hit A Ehalt at 418 West First, taking a cent, fled, and was nabbed as he came out of a fence by Officers Walls Harmeling and Jacob Michel. The suspect, Samuel Schumpert from Louisiana, was jailed as a negro suspect amid a mob outside the station. Jewelry found on him included a lavaliere. Earlier, St Mary’s Vestry was broken into with boxes opened but nothing stolen. Investigations suspect the same man carried out both visits.
J Rakestraw recovered a dead man from the river above the K T bridge and notified Coroner Briscoe. The body, taken to the Cain Undertaking Company, is about 25, with a blue serge suit and a room key 004 at Reebach hotel. Believed from Chicago, a letter addressed to a companion was found. The case involves telegraphic inquiries to identify the deceased, possibly Seard of Chicago, once from March 28. The Seelbach hotel denies a guest present. The body is badly decomposed.
