The Democratic caucus nominates Thomas A. Hendricks for U S Senator for six years and David Turpie for the short term. The piece notes rivals, party loyalties, and disputes within the Indiana legislature. On Tuesday morning December 22 Mr Nicholas Alvey of Company G 81st Indiana Volunteers died suddenly in camp near Nashville. He rose about 4 AM, fetched water, answered roll call at daylight, then lay down and died soon after. A Derby Perry county youth, he was respected by all. Remains sent to Nashville for interment Tuesday afternoon.
A Cincinnati Gazette report notes three leading Interior Secretary candidates Otto of New Albany Case of Fort Wayne and Corwin of Dayton. Indiana factions back Otto or Case while Ohio group shuns Corwin. Desperate crime at Lawson farm near Lewisport Kentucky where barn and outbuildings burned killing two horses. Lawson opposed Emancipation Proclamation.
