Edith Long, 578 East Elm Street, vanished about three weeks ago. Relatives keep a constant search, believing she may be boarding in a nearby town. No cause is given, and local acquaintances cleared of involvement though the case remains puzzling. Edith is the daughter of James Long, formerly a foreman at the Monon machine shops.

Rev Dr H W Thomas stirred San Francisco readers by declaring America must end Spain s oppression of Cuba. He condemned Spain as backward, praised liberty, and urged US sympathy for Cuban patriots, noting protests and the city s attentive audience.
A Philadelphia report cites letters from a Cuban revolutionary party member claiming the Spanish cruiser Barcastegui was sunk by a floating torpedo launched by Cubans after a Havana harbor collision story earlier said to involve a merchant steamer. Five persons drowned while bathing in Lake Michigan in Chicago at the foot of Lawrence avenue and Barry avenue. ROBERT BECKER aged 19 Oscar HUBER aged 21 OTTO SCHWEIGER aged 20 GEORGE ENGEL aged 1 WILLIAM ELLIOTT aged 11 were reported dead. Becker Huber and Schweiger had been in a boat that drifted away. The three who drowned could not swim to the boat.
In Peoria Illinois the Big Four whisky train east of Leroy caught fire in a car loaded with spirits. Conductor Murphy and brakeman John Muldoon tried to extinguish the blaze. An explosion blew the car apart. both men were badly burned and rushed to Indianapolis hospital in critical condition.
A strong wind moved through northern Dane county on September 23, uprooting trees, damaging buildings and overturning objects. The storm tracked through a station named Dane on the Northwestern road, narrowly missing a passenger train as the engineer accelerated to outrun the gale.
In Quixcy Illinois on Saturday Justice Allen presided as John H Cook and Alice Hinson wed. The justice reacted with surprise when John vowed to love and obey and Alice to cherish him, noting it was his first experience with the new woman. Separately in Newport Kentucky vandals entered York Street Congregationalist Church, damaged the Bible and mutilated the organ with hatchets.

The New Stockyards Company sued Union Railway to force freight handling and track switches linking the new yards, alleging the old stockyards firm and railway are effectively one and refused service to the new company. In Morristown, the father-in-law of Joseph Myer reappeared after 32 years, after leaving wife and child who is now Myer’s wife. Logansport reports Charles W. Martin, a Panhandle line mail clerk, fatally injured when a train jumped the track near Gilman. he was injured internally after leaping from the car.
