Cashel proclaims a cash only policy as the sole fair system, denying credit to all and asserting lower prices make cash purchases profitable for customers. The ad claims credit houses burden buyers with others debts and touts growing trade as proof of approval by the public.
Decoration Day ceremonies honored fallen soldiers with services at Arlington Soldiers' Home Congressional Cemetery and battle cemeteries. Generals Harrison and Bussey addressed crowds in New York and Baltimore amid cloudy skies and a brief shower. Crowds gathered at Mt. Vernon Glymount and Sheridan graves as Marine band played. Notables including Eugene Ware and PD S Alexander spoke, with mass said for Gen Sheridan at St Matthew's Church.
A ceremony unveiled Gen. Sheridan's granite monument with a bronze medallion while army officers and Mrs. Sheridan attended. The floral tribute featured the commandery's Sheridan flag in crimson immortelles and white carnations. Rain spoiled outdoor activities after 2 PM, ending planned excursions.
Crowds honor President Harrison in Brooklyn parade with 11000 to 12000 troops as Grand Army crews and cemeteries receive tributes. In New York City Decoration Day festivities feature a grand parade led by Major General Howard with National Guard units and Grand Army posts, followed by memorial services at the Metropolitan Opera House.
The president, Secretary Tracy and Private Secretary Halford traveled from Jersey City to Washington. They were taken to the Pennsylvania railroad depot where President Roberts' private car waited, and the car attached to the limited express as it left at 3 54 p.m.
Baltimore May 30 Gen Cyrus Bussey criticizes the Lost Cause as a crime and urges enfranchisement for Black voters, arguing reconstruction succeeds when the negro gains suffrage. He notes Northern-led industrial recovery and calls for equal rights as tribute to Union dead.
Fort Smith Arkansas May 31 Congressman Kelly denounced Arkansas as in disrepute in a decoration speech. He recalled the assassination of comrades Benjamin and Clayton for loyalty to the flag and pledged protection with his influence and power.
Indignation over Mr Kelly's speech sparked a 3 pm gathering at the court house with Democrats, Republicans and Grand Army men adopting resolutions denouncing him. Kelly has left town.
St Louis held a large Memorial Day with five thousand G A R members marching to Jefferson Barracks and the National cemetery where eleven thousand Union graves were decorated. Ora tions and salutes marked the event with about one hundred thousand spectators. In Connecticut the Veteran association decorated a Confederate grave at East Haven and joined local G A R posts in cemetery ceremonies and a green mass meeting.
In New Orleans on May 30, G A R Posts, Confederate Association of the Army of the Tennessee, and the Northern Virginia veterans and cavalry joined in decorating graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Services of prayer and orations followed.
In Birmingham on May 30 the G A R posts and Confederate veterans joined to decorate Federal and Confederate graves though poor weather slightly disrupted the ceremonies observed in Mexico.
American women in the city marked ration day by decorating graves of Americans who fell in IS47, honoring fallen servicemen and maintaining memory of the war dead.
Cold northwest wind and drizzle dampened Decoration Day, but a large crowd gathered at the national cemetery with flags and flowers. Sanderson Post and John Craig Post led ceremonies with Mayor McDonald presiding, music by Paulsen's Star band and church choirs, and prayers and anthems, though weather curtailed much of the program.
Major C. W. Lee, department chaplain of the G A R, extols the Civil War era and the nation’s unity in a speaker’s oration. He notes 28 years since the call to arms, the war’s transformative impact, and Southern sympathy with the Union, praising divine providence and republican glory.
