George Taylor formerly of the city and brother of James W. Taylor was killed in Kansas City Missouri while employed on the Rock Island railroad. He was thirty five and had worked as a printer and in the U S mail service before turning to railroading. He leaves a wife and three children and is survived by two sisters and two brothers. His death details remain unclear as to the cause. His family awaits further word from Kansas City.
The board of public works ordered improvements for Market Square between Pearl and State streets based on City Engineer Mann’s plans. Objections could be filed today by resident property holders. Reinhardt Dietz favored the plan though away in Europe. Some property owners suggested brick paving instead of concrete at the plaza and bids were set for June 19. City estimates and rebates were outlined, while Greenaway Place was also slated for partial work with bids due June 19. East Fourth Street opposition defeated the improvement. In Washington Indiana May 23 the Rev E E Davidson absent minister of the First Christian church may face Circuit Court next Tuesday to contest Miss Bunn Clark's suit seeking to legalize a common law marriage allegedly performed at the Metropolitan Hotel in St Louis Depositions from St Louis residents citing Davidson and Miss Clark will be offered if the case proceeds The church board has not acted on the pastor's resignation beyond recording it.
Terre Haute on May 22 nominated William Morsley Republican and Louis Gerhardt Democrat for mayor. Four candidates ran in each party, with Gerhardt winning by a large plurality and Morsley beating Frank Buckingham by about 600 votes. Voter turnout was light but close races occurred for city clerk and city treasurer amid a hot campaign over business administration and municipal partnership.
Washington May 22. Senate floor debate on tariffs has seen sharp criticisms among members. Mr Hale charged Sen Beveridge with seeking newspaper notoriety for frequent speeches, a claim Beveridge denied saying he only aims to do his duty. There is strong indication that night sessions may be reported unless progress improves.
Springfield May 22 Mrs Catherine Waugh McCulloch’s bill permitting women to vote in city village and town officers and some township officers failed 25 to 18 in the senate. McCulloch says all senators who promised to vote for the bill voted for it.
A large audience enjoyed the joint recital by the High School choral club and orchestra in the auditorium. Under Mr. Anton H. Embs’s direction, the program featured marches, arias, violin and harp solos, multiple choruses, a humorous piece, and ends with an orchestral number.
