In Nashville Indiana Thornton Deckard shot and fatally wounded Marshal Taylor in the courthouse yard after an affidavit against Taylor was quashed. Six shots were fired two hit Taylor in the abdomen and he is expected to die. Deckard was released on $1000 bail.
Postmaster General Payne announces letters to the comptroller of the treasury and the post office auditor seeking explanations on statements by former cashier Tulloch. He differentiates irregular accounting from unlawful acts and notes disputed sums were later allowed. He cites Per ry Heath and George Beavers and questions their status while out of service.
The speaker denounces misdeeds by current and former officials and vows to probe any improper acts in the department. Allegations of unperformed work are under review with efforts to recover funds, naming the Washington postmaster as responsible and mentioning the late Mr. Willett. Foley's Honey and Tar is stocked by O. D. Knoefel.
In Trenton on May 19 Judge Kirkpatrick set aside the $500 verdict for Henry T. Johnson a colored preacher who sued Pullman for being refused a parlor car seat on a Richmond to Washington trip. He based the ruling on the unconstitutional 1875 federal act concerning interstate commerce.
Telluride Colorado May 19 District Judge Theron Stevens quashed twenty four indictments from last December connected to the Smuggler Union riots and murders on the grounds of an illegally drawn grand jury. The district attorney plans indirect informations against all indicted men.
Glenwood Wisconsin May 19 coroner s jury finds Herman Sachs died from revolver shots by his son Richard Sachs and rules the fatal shots were fired in self defense the incident occurred May 8 in Glenwood.
A patient reports severe kidney trouble relieved by Electric Bitters after trying various medicines. After a few doses, the user felt relief and was soon completely cured, noting no sick days since.
Washington May 19 Professor Alexander Graham Bell resigns the presidency of the National and will devote his time to perfecting a flying machine. The move signals Bell will focus on aeronautical research and related experiments.
The board of governors accepted the resignation of a prominent officer to take effect with the election of a successor next winter. Prof. Bell states his time will be devoted for more than a year to perfecting a new kite flying machine.

Bedford Indiana May 19 D F Kennedy arrives to head stone mill strike as workers and operators clash over union and non union labor. Sawyers tool men and stone cutters refuse scab work while non unionists expected. Indications point to broader walkouts and possible general strike causing big losses.
Indianapolis May 19 The nineteenth annual session of the Rebekah assembly is in convention in Indianapolis. The secretary reports no delinquent lodges. There were 617 lodges May 1, 1903, a net gain of four. Members totaled 40,296 at year end 1902, up 2,988. Receipts for the year were 38606.08. expenses 23964.30. relief 2154.46. Treasurer’s reports show home fund 20184.82 assembly fund 8073.60 fraternal building fund 401.66. Disbursements of assembly fund 1272.55, balance 1801.05.
Calvin Rocke fifty eight a Civil War veteran is believed insane by whitecaps pursuit. An application was filed to admit him to the central hospital for the insane. Years earlier a bundle of switches left on his doorstep with an injunction to go to work triggered his distress and a recent whitecap episode left him mentally deranged.
Sheriff Winchell of Spencer County loses prisoner Clif Edwards on a rapidly moving Southern Indiana train. Edwards, handcuffed beside the sheriff, sprang up and jumped off to escape. He is accused of robbing the Kercheval post office.
The body found Sunday in the Tippecanoe river is identified as John Scanlon who was accidentally killed on a Pennsylvania railroad track last January. Dr. W L Hines of War saw received the unclaimed body for dissection and buried the dismembered remains on the riverbank two months ago.
May 19 Greencastle Indiana reports growing suspicion that Mrs. Seward’s murder was not by a tramp but by a person familiar with the premises. The coroner and sheriff pursue the case and an arrest of a non tramp is probable.
La Porte Ind May 19 Grand jury of Porter county has begun a rigid investigation into a charge related to the Great War era. The probe focuses on wartime matters and potential misconduct by local officials or entities connected to the war effort.
In Indianapolis on May 19 Senator Beveridge and allies launched a low key bid to secure his renomination. Backers expect unanimous Republican caucus backing with no opposition, while some leaders plan to contest his renomination despite popular will. In Valparaiso Indiana Walter Haler twenty two of Burdick and Butler Shaner tried to ride the pilot of a switch engine between Chesterton and Burdick on the Lake Shore railway and were struck by a freight train. Haler was killed instantly and Shaner escaped by leaping to safety.
In Thibodeaux Louisiana on May 19 ex Lieutenant Governor Henry Clay Knoblock was shot and killed by barber James Garault on Main Street. Autopsy found five fatal wounds. Garault surrendered and may receive bond. Knoblock, a LaFourche parish native, served under Governor Samuel D McEnery and leaves a wife and son Earle in New Orleans.
National League games saw Pittsburg beat New York 3 to 2 and Philadelphia defeat St. Louis 5 to 8. Brooklyn lost to Cincinnati 3 to 7 while Boston topped Chicago 4 to 2. American League results show Washington over Chicago 7 to 1 and Detroit defeating Boston 12 to 1 with Cleveland winning 7 to 3 against New York. American Association notes Minneapolis 8 St Paul 9. Jockey Meinery in Churchill Downs crash described. rider injured, condition uncertain but a fighting chance reported.
Lemuel Randall of Foreston Minnesota, eighteen, was arrested on stealing fifty pounds of dynamite from the Foreston depot. He placed ten pounds on the track east of Foreston intending to blow up the Willmar passenger train. He has confessed saying he wanted to see a wreck.
In a U S Supreme Court motion Bates for Delaware asks to fix a time for testimony in the original boundary dispute with New Jersey. The case No 1 has lingered twenty seven years with both sides now ready to expedite but delaying hearing until after October 1904 for possible testimony in England.
In Campus Wyoming county two men, How ard Polette and Wilbur Cheatman, died in a fire while sleeping in a second story log building. Several companions were badly burned and may die. All victims lived in Wyoming county and worked for a Cincinnati lumber company in timber camps.
Guthrie Oklahoma May 19. W W Montgomery charged with bigamy in Iowa Nebraska and Oklahoma was recaptured beneath the house of Mrs Kate Wyeth. It is alleged Wyeth became infatuated with him gave him a revolver and helped him escape after he killed Jailer Jerry Emerson.
In Battle Creek Michigan Kert Woodcock of Bridgeport escaped attendants at a temple and fled into a shed where he cannot recover from his injuries. The incident follows a separate note from San Francisco dated May 19 indicating Jeffries and James J. Corbett signed articles for a boxing match planned for August 14 in the city.
