An Indiana women’s group report from a convention praises Union soldiers, condemns liquor laws and local politics, and urges stronger prohibition. Miss Reed discusses postwar gratitude, the Paris exposition, and mobilizes women to influence state legislation and elect pro reform representatives.
Isd unions record 147 in the main division and 2 813 women veterans. The Y companies muster 28 units under a patriotic banner and 737 dauntless youths join, marking a 58 percent increase from last year.
The piece notes 54 companies across 26 counties with 2,387 soldiers of honor enlisted. Ft. Wayne’s Allen division leads with 168 members while Wayne division has 7 companies and 283 youths, still first in company counts.
The report notes 671 brother-hearted honorary members ready to help in home emergencies. It critiques Union reporting and urges fidelity and promptness, recommending properly arranged books for secretary and treasurer reports and better business methods.
Despite a year of resistance, seventy unions have formed with fifty one becoming active units. The message highlights sustained labor organization amid opposition and stresses ongoing labor expansion across sectors.
The speaker notes that many of the nineteen are gone due to officials' carelessness and ignorance and urges placing one or more organizers in the field supported by collections to aid the effort.
The revival of gospel temperance work under Francis Murphy and sons is welcomed by the W C T U with cooperation. The text notes a continuing focus on prevention, reporting 577 gospel meetings, 1576 pledge signatures, and 44 conversions as part of broader unreported efforts.
Mass meetings and lectures total 380 featuring Mrs Hofman Lathrop Buell St John Clothier Geo W Bain Rev Anna Shaw and other national speakers plus Indiana leaders. Treasury shows 1715 87 receipts 1701 30 expenditures and 14 57 balance. Proceedings include county organization talk by Alice Palmer and a welcome to New Albany with clergy remarks and a Presbyterian view of the movement.
A detailed Monday program lists devotional hour led by Mrs. S M I Henry, prayer by Mrs H DP McMullen, and reports from department superintendents. Afternoon sessions cover memorial service, resolutions, work among colored people and foreigners, state fairs, health, kindergarten temperance methods, parliamentary usage, patriot meetings, miscellaneous items, and adjournment.
W B Hinkley of the American Express Co in the Opera House building has renovated his office turning it into a neat and commodious space. He began as a driver and rose to his current post boosting New Albany express shipments. A platform at Oak and Pearl Streets will load crates for northern destinations as berry season opens. Shippers are directed to Mr Hinkley for prompt handling of express goods.
On May 10 1889 churches announce morning gatherings at 9 to 10:30 with parish bulletins and Sunday school sessions. Trinity M E lists numbered hymn selections and a scripture lesson, plus reports and a benediction. Tabernacle led by I B Timberlake preaches Divine Government with no night service due to WC T U. Bethel A M E features morning service at 10 30 and communion at 3 pm with temperance address at 7 30 by WC T U. Central Christian, Second Presbyterian and Episcopalian notes: services 10 30 am and 7 30 pm, C E meeting at 7 pm, WC T U delegates occupying pulpit, strangers welcome.
A woman visiting the city hotel, described as the leading local establishment, stops at the office to obtain the newspaper containing the proceedings from the W C T U convention.
A May Baltimore dispatch recounts Allan Thorn dyke Rice born June 18, 1853 to Henry Rice and Mrs Thorndyke. After his mother eloped with a tutor, Rice was taken to Canada then New York, Europe, and later recovered by detectives before being placed with his grandmother Mrs Bourne in Boston and sent to Oxford University.
Funeral services for Allen Thorndyke Rice will be held in Grace church tomorrow with Bishop Potter and Dr. Huntington officiating. The body will be taken to Boston for interment and custody will be by C. V. Cutting of Boston and ex-Mayor Cooper.
The Rev Townsend, named to head a division in the interior department, says the president honored his race. He plans to conduct himself with credit to his people and will return from Richmond Ind to assume duties on June 15 after a May 18 departure.
The president named Charles Swayne of Florida as United States District Judge for the Northern District of Florida and William D. Lee of New Mexico as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Territory of New Mexico.
A local sale announces the Joe H Kraft Dry Goods Store will open next Tuesday morning offering water soaked stock at sacrifice. Dress goods and seasonable summer items will be sold regardless of value to help shoppers stock up for the year.
Miss Carrie Ehrhart, newly hired shorthand and type-writing instructor, arrived Tuesday. She is a graduate of New Albany Business College with diplomas in both fields and plans to begin teaching promptly.
