Washington May 6 report that the real tariff revision remains to be drafted in conference between House and Senate. President Taft avoids taking sides while conferees begin study of the two bills. he favors a graduated federal inheritance tax and may support an extra excise tax on corporate dividends if needed.
Senator Aldrich and Senator Culberson analyzed the tariff bill as reported to the senate. Culberson cited 356 decreases and 116 increases with 1271 unchanged articles. Aldrich listed 379 reductions and questioned the increases. Both attributed figures to Treasury Department experts. The main rise areas include agricultural products and luxury goods.
Washington May 6 The tariff bill returned to the senate for committee amendments after a ten day pause as senators spoke on the measure as a whole. Small progress was made with eight pages reviewed before adjournment.
Delegates of the second national peace congress conclude their three day convention with a banquet in Chicago hosted by the Chicago Association of Commerce signaling a real step forward in the world peace movement.

A messenger letter from Harni reports that all men have been killed and only women, girls, and children under ten survive. Churches and houses were looted and burned leaving survivors starving and living on grass. The widow of a clergyman writes of dire conditions and lack of food or clothing.
Pittsburg May 6 Judge Robert 8 Fraser imposed sentences on seven men convicted in municipal graft cases. W. W. Ramsey, former bank president, got one year six months and a 1000 dollar fine. Captain John F Klein received two years and 1000 dollar fine for bribery, plus one year six months on conspiracy. Joseph C Wascon and William Brand each got one year six months and 500 dollar fines for conspiracy. H M Bolger got two years and 500 dollar fine for bribery. Charles Colbert and John Colbert got two years and 600 dollar fines each for attempting to bribe a jury.
An American seaman named Payne arriving in Kingston recounts that captain Collin Stephenson and his crew of the whaling ship Carrie D Knowles were imprisoned in Venezuela after a distress port call five years earlier. He says the ship was disabled in a storm and the crew imprisoned. authorities in Kingston say they will investigate.
Milwaukee hosts Count Johann Heitrich von Hernstorff, German ambassador to the United States, as the city with many German-born residents showcases hospitality. He will stay two days and attend a Citizens' Business League banquet where he will discuss social reforms in Germany.
In Jefferson City on May 6 the Missouri senate approved a constitutional prohibition amendment with a tax rider and removal of the 1913 limit by a 23 to 8 vote. The measure becomes effective upon voter approval.
Chicago May 6 Wheat for May delivery sold at 1.29 and a half cents per bushel a new high for the season. The session turned weak and closed unchanged to one and a half cents lower than the previous close.

Milwaukee detective Frank T. Wagner testified before the senatorial investigating committee that he saw money handed to Assemblymen Ramsey Farrell and Towne at the Plankinton house in Milwaukee before the March 4 election of United States Senator Isaac Stephenson. He said two packages were involved and bank official Puelicher delivered the money to M. J. Regan who paid it out. Ramsey denied Wagner’s claim and said he has not been in the Plankinton house since the day before the November general election.

Former adjutant general in Washington state, Hamilton, is charged by the governor with embezzlement and forgery. He is alleged to have stolen about $60,000 from the state fund, with an initial warrant specifying $11,000.
In Bloomfield Indiana on May 6 a verdict found William H Good guilty of murder in the max slaughter of Puchard Dwyer at a Swite City hotel last November 95. In Lafayette Indiana May 6 Purdue student Roy Armstrong of Northampton Mass was found not guilty after a city court hearing. The defense argued he had not voted elsewhere and lacked sufficient evidence to hold him for grand jury action.
The roll on the eightieth joint ballot shows former Senator Hopkins with 69 votes, Foss 17, and Speaker Shurtleff 18. Democratic support goes to John C. Eastman of Chicago with 49 votes, while L. B. Stringer receives 16 votes.
Former Venezuelan leader Fidel Castro says doctors advised him to travel to the Canary Islands for medical reasons. He plans to follow medical guidance and monitor his health while abroad.
