In Bamberg South Carolina on May 4 Rev. W. E. Johnson pastor of the Baptist church shot and killed W. T. Bellinger a stenographer in the judicial district. The men argued over painting a fence at John R. Bellinger’s premises, Johnson surrendered to the sheriff, and Bellinger died shortly after. The Bellinger family is prominent in town.
Chicago May 5 A negro bishop of unlimited authority will be created at the Methodist general conference in session at the Auditorium. Dr Joan W Bowen acting president of Gammon Theological Seminary Atlanta Ga was given a large complimentary vote in 1896 Episcopal elections and chosen secretary of the committee on episcopacy yesterday slated for the place He will be the Great negro bishop in the Methodist church.

The British steamer Virginia captained by Charles Samuel struck Diamond Shoal near Cape Henry on May 5. One lifeboat with 15 crew escaped, another boat swamped leaving six drowned. Five survivors were rescued by life saving crews and ashore. The vessel, carrying iron ore from Daquiri to Baltimore, is a total loss.
New York May 5 Joe Walcott and Mysterious Billy Smith battled 25 rounds at catchweights before the Broadway Athletic Club. Walcott took the decision. It was their fourth meeting with two draws and a prior Smith decision. Smith lacked his usual snap but gave a game defensive battle.
Fort Wayne May 5. William Branstrator, 76, wealthy farmer, was killed when his horse bolted, throwing him from the vehicle. His body hung in the traces and was dragged about five miles. The incident occurred as he returned to his farm, ending in a fatal runaway accident.
Indianapolis May 5 Cora G Comer withdraws from a U S court a breach of promise suit for 80000 against Dr Michael A Jordan of Logansport. She alleged he promised to marry her and later wed another. Attorneys sought remand to state court but judge ruled she resided in Chicago. Case dismissed at her telegraph request.
President McNary of the Logansport Rochester and Northern Traction company recorded a $4,000,000 mortgage with Mercantile Trust Company of New York to fund the electric line from Logansport to Kendaville. The mortgage covers Cass Fulton Kosciusko and Noble counties and construction is set to begin in June.
Flora Indiana May 5 William Shanks seeks a license to retail toxicants at Burlington. Residents declare and will enforce the prohibition with dynamite that no saloon shall exist. No remonstrance will be filed in the commissioners court. If approved another saloon wreck is likely at Burlington.
J R Raurbauch 54 a Singer Sewing Machine agent in Columbia City committed suicide yesterday by shooting himself in the forehead with a 32 caliber pistol. Investigators cite money worries and family troubles, while a note blames his brother for causing a pension rejection.
Wabash Indiana May 5 Barber Asphalt company will send its men and material next week to start a $60000 paying contract on Hill street. Officials favor federal court decisions in Barrett law cases and will await the Indiana supreme court ruling. Indianapolis May 5 Parks M Martin calls for the Indiana Democratic convention June 6 to select a full state ticket presidential electors and national convention delegates. The convention will have 1527 delegates.
Edward Murphy of North Manchester Indiana died after a board struck him while he worked with a saw. The 45 year old husband had recently gone to Arkansas. The accidental injury proved fatal.
Knightstown Indiana reports the I O O F lodge plans a June 14 dedication of its new temple. The lodge ranks among the state’s wealthiest with three grand lodge officers including the grand master among its members. The event will be elaborate.
Seymour Ind May 5 John D Elkins who lived near Kurtz killed himself by drowning in a well. He had split his foot with an ax two years ago which never healed fully and left him in constant pain and unable to work as before.
Petition signed by 100 residents and the county board seeks to clarify ownership of a Michigan gravel road segment now held by the Logans Port and Bullington Tomp ies company. The dispute centers on a pond and a tollhouse where two whitey wit s tal deathones were involved and dynamite was used to compel use.
