London reports Kruger proclaims Free State joined to the Transvaal while Steyn counters, declaring the Free State intact. Rumors persist of Mafeking relief with no confirmation, and British plans and Cape forces movements draw cautious attention as both sides claim favorable reports.
British and Boer artillery clash near Warrenton as Maj Blewitt’s guns engage four Boer pieces. A scouting party suffers fire but returns at dusk with one wounded. A Fusiliers detachment arrives as two prisoners claim the Kimberley big gun moved toward Pretoria via Christiana. Trains reach eight miles of Warrenton.
London reports from Kroonstad via Pretoria state Gen Olivier's Boers engaged Gen Gatacre's British troops near Bethulle, repulsing them with heavy losses and capturing many. Burghers continue arriving in London while Gen De Wet also arrived. Disjointed clashes with Col Plumer's column occurred near Gaberones.
Several thousand Boers with a huge wagon convoy move from Smithfield and Wepener toward Lady Brand over two days. The retreating force is believed to have left Norvals Pont Bethulie and Stormberg as they advance north.
London dispatch notes no specific Gatacre movement report yet while rumors of Boer victories persist. Spencer Wilkinson comments Roberts will coordinate two to three armies, aiming to trap the Boers and restore mobility for the next move, with Mafeking rising in importance.
Dispatch from Pretoria reports Commandant Snyman attacking Plumer at Lebasti with British forces fleeing. Four prisoners and 15 cases of ammunition with horses and guns were seized. Earlier Col Bodle reconnoitered near Pitsani and on March 15 Boers attacked the British left flank with Maxim and a 12 pounder, nearly routing the camp.
Warrenton March 23 The Boers have left Klipdam and Windsor ton and their families have fled with them. They sank all the boats at Riverton and Windsor ton. The Vaal river now can only be crossed by swimming as patrols keep the British in control on this side.
Bloemfontein dispatch says rumors place Kruger and Steyn meeting at Kroonstadt on April 4 to discuss the future programme. Tension between the Transvaal and Free State remains very bitter.
President John M. Williamson of the board of health declares the Chinese quarter is infected with plague and that inspectors will search every nook and cranny. The district will be drenched with disinfectants, suspicious cases isolated, and developments awaited as San Francisco confronts a serious condition.
Washington March 23. After three days of debate the Loud bill on second class mail matter was recomitted by the house to the committee on post offices. The vote 148 to 96 with 16 present and voting ends any likely appearance this session. Loud called it the third time out as far as he was concerned.
A historical notice states druggists refund money when the product Wit fails to cure. It bears K. W. Grove's signature on each box, tying the period to pharmaceutical advertising and consumer guarantees.
The body of Kelly Brinsfield, a minister's son who vanished months ago, was found under a house. He had drawn thousands from an insurance account before disappearance. His father blamed excessive smoking for driving him mad, with a half packet of cigarettes found beside the body.

Logansport Indiana March 23 The big safe in Superintendent Bonebrakes Panhandle office cannot be opened as no one knows the combination. The knob was turned accidentally and the box was locked only with a key before. Experts and a cracksmith were unsuccessful using cold chisels and electricity. The safe holds valuable papers and awaits a solution.
Emma Lohse aged 17 died from trichinosis after eating pork. The death follows another in the Lohse family and reveals Jacob Sievers and two sons, from east of town, also fell ill after eating the same meat. The Hahmann family of four is reported very ill.
The 41st annual report from the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane highlights crowded conditions and urges immediate relief measures. It notes 45 patients are from outside the district, indicating overflow beyond the local area.
In Portland Indiana on March 23 the circuit court quashed the information against Sheridan Bailey for alleged violation of the compulsory education law. It held that the law’s defective title is enough to merit review by the supreme court, and the case will be carried up immediately.
In Logansport Indiana on March 23 8 B Nickum known as the perpetual light man has not received mail for six weeks as letters and papers remain with Postmaster Powell under orders from Washington. About two bushels of mail await disposition for the perpetual light man.
Brazil Indiana March 23 The jury in the case of Dr L C Griffith of Cory indicted for shooting and wounding William Staggs returned a verdict finding the defendant guilty of assault and battery and assessing a fine of 200 dollars

Representatives of the Benbow family met in Muncie Indiana to choose Isaac Lamb of Richmond to represent them in efforts to recover money currently idle in the Bank of England.
Goshen Indiana March 23 Dr David K Boyer practicing at Middlebury wins another attempt to convict him of practicing medicine with a diploma from an unsanctioned school.
Frankfort Ind March 28 The Clinton county council appropriated 15200 for voting machines for the entire county. The appropriation is based on a unit price of 50 per machine and covers installation and maintenance during the first year.
Elkhart Indiana March 23 fifty farmers formed a rural telephone company. Twenty miles of wire will be strung to connect seventy five homes in the county.
State troops loyal to Governor Beckham occupy the Franklin county courthouse and jail in Frankfort Kentucky and will perform military duty during the examining trials of Caleb Powers John Davis and W H Culton Judge Moore presiding. Reinforcements include 75 special deputy sheriffs and a Lexington company of 70 men under Captain Longmire. The march drew cheering crowds but avoided the state house square where Governor Taylors forces are housed. Longmire led with a revolver and troops carried two guns each.
In Washington Indiana on March 23 the senate spent most of its session discussing the conference report on the Porto Rico appropriation bill. Democratic senators criticized the house provision for future revenue, warning it echoes the Dingley tariff. Republicans proposed an immediate vote on the house Porto Rico tariff but were blocked by Senator Pettus after Senator Proctor signaled a possible vote next week.
Washington March 3 The Republican peace committee of the senate met after adjournment and practically ratified Senator Foraker's offer to separate the Porto Rican tariff bill from the senate government bill and vote on the house measure. Free trade senators say eight, including Davis and Nelson of Minnesota Well ington of Maryland Hoar Mason Beveridge Proctor and Simon, will not back the bill unless amended. They foresee a possible compromise.
Naples March 23. A thief tried to rob Mrs Burges and Miss Burges of Boston as they left a shop. The purse was seized and the thief tackled. Miss Burges grabbed him by the throat, threw him down, recovered the property, and calmly sent him away.

In Garners near Raleigh Tom Jones known as Preacher Jones is accused of murdering Ella Jones and daughter Ida with an ax then setting fire to the home killing four sleeping children aged 2 months to 5 years. Laura Jones, a 7-year-old survivor, aided arrest by identifying bloodstained clothes on Jones. All parties involved are Black.
Norfolk report says J. N. Wel ton and J. W. Saunders of Emporia were killed and robbed by two tramps in Greensville County. Saunders was found dead. Welton barely living and able to describe the attackers. A posse formed and the suspects were captured amid public outrage.
Lawrence Walsch gave himself up at the Chicago police station admitting he shot Robert Gilchrist through the door of Gilchrist's barbershop last night. He claims a grievous wrong prompted the act but details remain unclear.
A brawl involving jackies in Galveston ends with Michael Melligan, boatswain’s mate on the gunboat Machias, fatally shot and his brother Edward, a fireman on the cruiser New York, wounded in the lip. H. M. Ward, master of the Lawrence, is under arrest.
Hopkinsville Kentucky March 23 William Glover and Tom McCain colored say they wrecked a Louisville and Nashville passenger train near Hopkinsville Tuesday night by placing fish plates on the track. They confess the aim was to wreck the freight train to loot the cars.

Springfield March 23 Lieutenant Governor Northcott assumes charge of the executive department of state during Governor Tanner's absence in the south. Northcott expects the governor to return within ten days.
The veteran Ue. Samuel Smiles LL D author of Self Help has suffered a heavy affliction in the loss of his wife. Dr Smiles reached his eighty seventh year in December last. The ad promotes a salve called Banner claimed to heal piles burns scalde ulcers running sores and skin diseases with nationwide recognition.
A collodium explosion at the Thomas M. McCollin & Co. photographic supply firm on South Eleventh Street kills Herman Weiss, 19, and injures four others. The blast wrecks the McCollin building and damages the adjacent Wv. Clad & Sons structure, with over 100 workers inside when it occurred on the sixth floor. The force blew out the north wall and toppled debris through the Clad roof.
Mr W A Hines of Manchester South Carolina recounts a near death from consumption followed by lung trouble and hemorrhages. He credits Dr King's New Discovery for consumption with his complete recovery after doctors said he would die.
