A freight train oil tanks exploded near Olean New York as a crowd watched. Two tank cars burst into flames and a third exploded. Twenty two bodies recovered with many others missing or severely burned. Police and doctors treated the injured as volunteers aided victims.
In Berlin on March 10, Herr Bebel the socialist leader denounced dueling as a conspiracy of the upper classes against law and religion. He cited recent dueling notas, criticized pardons for duelists, and condemned mistreatment of German soldiers including a sergeant forcing a private to drink spit.

Captain Jorgensen and nine crewmen of the American bark Alex McNeil, wrecked on Pratas reef near Hong Kong, tell of officers' intoxication and a drunken quarrel after leaving Hong Kong on November 10. A boat with the first mate and four crew vanished. rescue came after three weeks on the reef.
