In Grand Rapids July 20 an elderly Holland woman, Mrs. Antonia VanVosten, collapsed and died on the street while returning from church. A cloth peach tied at her waist over her skirt concealed $1,045 in gold and bills, suggesting poverty but revealing a surprising sum.
The steam er Islander from Skagway reached Victoria on July 20 with passengers from Dawson in under six days, breaking prior records. She brought $70,000 in gold. News arrived of the death of J. H. Alexander, Jr., collector of customs at Port Slimpson.

In Kokomo Indiana July 20 former councilman Jerry Metool a G A K post commander was shot after a dispute with Edward Van Hart a bartender at Pat Maher's saloon. Metool followed Van Hart into a yard and struck him with a fence picket. Van Hart drew a revolver and shot Metool in the chest. Metool died. Van Hart surrendered to authorities.
Four farm residences in Waltz township were robbed Saturday afternoon. The houses of Daniel Laven good Hiram Pitckenger John Frantz and Henry Austine were entered and valuables taken. Police seek Albert Fisher a young man recently released from Michigan City for larceny.
Attorneys for Jobo Hingard the wife slayer in Michigan City prison plan to petition Indiana Supreme Court for a stay of execution next Wednesday. Judge Shiveley set August 23 for the hanging with counsel stating the appeal may reach the court in October.

Lisbon Indiana man Chas O Ellis repaired a damaged telegraph line and suffered a severe cold and cough. He consulted doctors in Oakland and nearby cities who said consumption was fatal.
