A southbound Chicago and Eastern Illinois passenger train collided with a northbound train at Royal way station in Champaign county. An open switch caused No. 23 to take the path of No. 26 at fifty miles an hour. three men were killed and two injured.
Four men attempted to blow the Barnett Allen bank at Broughton, 32 miles west of Carmi, by nitroglycerin. Cashier Allen fired from a second story opposite the bank as the robbers exchanged shots, forcing them to flee on a handcar. the safe was damaged but not opened and no suspects were found.
In Danville Illinois on July 17 unknown assailants attempted to blow up the home of Samuel Baum a wealthy retired farmer. Two sticks of dynamite with fuses burned nearly to detonation were found under a pantry by a family member. The wet leaves dampened the fuse and prevented an explosion. The same house was dynamited a year earlier with no damage.
Four year old Mary Brown daughter of Mrs George Brown died after burning herself with matches bought by she and her brother Curtis for ten cents worth of ice cream. Her clothes caught fire and she did not regain consciousness despite rescue efforts.
Fred Fricke, saloon keeper, tried to stop his wife from using a magazine gun to kill herself. He was shot in the arm. Mrs. Fricke, believing him dead, turned the weapon on herself and fired a bullet into her breast. She is not expected to survive. Family troubles precipitated the act.
Lightning struck an oak tree where three Lafayette lads camped by the Wabash river eight miles north of Lafayette Ind Don Baird 17 was killed Charles Baird 20 and Grover Siler were injured in the incident authorities said the accident occurred on July 17 at the camp along the east bank of the river

About 200 police guard the riot grounds as four strikers seek arbitration, which the company rejects.

On Market street in Louisville five year old Yetta Kaufimenn was struck and killed by a tanueing car driven by W S Garner a wealthy liquor dealer of Danville Garner was stopped by bystanders and held until police arrested him for manslaughter Garner claimed he did not know his car had struck the girl
In Los Angeles on July 17 spectators crowded a five mile procession route for the mid summer flower and allegorical festival in honor of the Elks reunion. About 10 000 people participated in the pageant across the parade avenue.

In Laporte Indiana two white men and a Negro assaulted Gus Wiseman a 22 year old watchman at Camp 4 after he refused them whisky and money. They shoved him into a firebox and set clothing alight before rescuers pulled him free. He is in serious but improving condition. Deputies farmers and airline workers search Laporte and Porter counties for the trio with rewards offered.
