Manila July 16 Archbishop Chappelle argues leniency toward captured insurgent leaders is wasted as Asians do not understand it. He supports sending officers and officials to Guam as a residence and says the heads of leaders should be cut off, a stance noted in talks with American officers.
Prescott Arizona July 11 a massive blaze gutted five blocks of the business center destroying banks telegraph offices newspapers hotels saloons and restaurants. Losses are estimated between 1 000 000 and 1 500 000 with insurance likely under 500 000 as wind spread embers and crews fought the flames through Sunday. Temporary shelters and tents rose in the public plaza and banks opened in new quarters as residents faced the aftermath.
Manila reports pressure from Gen. MacArthur for increased American forces across the islands. Observers cite Gen. Mount Vernon Illinois July 16 William Reed of Farmington township was shot and killed instantly while riding in a wagon with his wife and children at about 5 o clock yesterday. Mrs Reed escaped with a non dangerous wound in the arm. Reed had just completed a penitentiary sentence for killing Andrew Sigers brother Williams two years ago.
Emporia Kansas July 16 0 Vo Eskridge editor of the Minportain RepubMean and former lieutenant governor died at his home Sunday from wounds related to a suicide attempt. Before dying Eskridge said he knew he could not live and was tired of life.
A cabinet member told reporters there has been no talk of an extra session of Congress to handle the Chinese situation. He said the president's authority is sufficient to deal with current conditions.

In Lavayette Indiana a quarrel between James W Napier and his son Otis escalated when Otis struck his father with a stone fracturing his skull. Believing his father dead Otis obtained a shotgun and killed himself by firing into his head and chest. The elder Napier lies critically injured at a farm near Americus.
The body of Howard S. Els age not stated was found near town bearing evidence of murder. Coroner reports a drunken Saturday night brawl ending with a blow from a beer bottle by Jim Osborn who was arrested. In Princeton Noble Springle age about unknown drowned on Saturday after a raft accident in a washout basin near Shadetown.
Union City Indiana July 16 15 year old Jock Smith left for Europe with his parents to pursue music studies. He has shown remarkable piano ability despite no formal training beyond rudiments from his sister. His depth of expression at a young age astonishes listeners as he performs difficult masters pieces. His father a Scottish immigrant farmer sold the farm to fund his son's musical education and return to Scotland.
South Bend Indiana July 10 The devotional exercises yesterday closed the north biennial convention of the Indiana Epworth league Attendance was strong and officers and members were enthusiastic The idea of disbanding the state organization is deemed absurd and reports of such talk stem from dissatisfaction among members over ministerial control of the group.
The state versus John and Frank Diehl of Anderson opened in Newcastle circuit court for the murder of Miss Mary Farwig of Richmond. The defendants, noted as among Anderson’s wealthier citizens, have hired prominent lawyers and the trial is expected to last a week.
