The National Cycling Association events at the 21st League of American Wheelmen meet in Milwaukee are canceled due to an unsafe exposition track. The $1,000 Cooper versus Major Taylor match race is called off as Cooper heads to Detroit and Taylor to Indianapolis.
New York reports twenty four bodies recovered from the steamship Saale hold yesterday, lifting the total dead to sixty. Many victims were unrecognizable though some were identified by initials or names on clothing remnants.

An estimated 10 000 to 15 000 Baptists travel to Cincinnati for the Baptiste Young Peoples Union convention. Over 800 attended Tuesday and hundreds arrive daily. Elkhart Indiana July 12 Indiana Railway Co operating a line from Goshen to South Bend will extend the line to Niles Michigan and is prepared to build from South Bend to Laporte and from Laporte to Michigan City but other parties hold the franchises demanding high sums. The Todiana company guarantees to have the line running before winter.

Petersburg Indiana July 12 The Pike circuit court ruled against Douglas Barker who sought to recover 1.23 dollars for an umbrella loaned at a burial. Barker had spent 100 dollars on the suit and the case favored Gus Frank Jr., who kept the umbrella.
The residence of Justice of the Peace Drew in Geneva was struck by lightning on July 12 in Portland Indiana. The house was severely damaged and set on fire but extinguished with little trouble. Drew slept in a bed insulated by glass insulators and escaped injury, though his daughter was prostrated.
At a Duff dance in Dubois county Indiana on July 12 a confrontation between Duff and New Pike county youths left John Fisher with a head wound from a beer bottle and another young man shot in the arm. The shooter is unidentified. Authorities report rival factions sparked the disturbance.

The Illinois Central fast train from New Orleans to Chicago was halted two miles south of Wicklife Kentucky. Six bandits entered the cab after stopping the train and assaulted the fireman. They cut the engine and express car loose, blew the express safe, and escaped with valuables estimated around ten thousand dollars. The express crew were forced to descend, and the robbers crossed into Missouri.
James B. Gillman and an unnamed companion, believed Oberlin College students, were discovered dead yesterday near a furnace stack in Marquette Michigan. Gillman carried a card with his name and affiliations. The pair, though well dressed, had only 35 cents between them.
