Georgetown Ky July 11 The defense in the Powers case moved for a continuance citing about ninety absent witnesses The commonwealth objected and ex Gov Brown asked adjournment to prepare affidavits supporting the motion The affidavit claims absent witnesses will contradict most testimony from the Frankfort examining trial If the commonwealth admits the affidavits the trial may proceed. otherwise a further delay is sought.
Lord Roberts reports from Pretoria that Clements and Paget's forces breached Bethlehem on July 7 after a truce demand was refused by Dewet. Paget executed a wide turning movement to seize the key position, with the Munster Fusiliers and Yorkshire Light Infantry capturing the town before dark. Continued assault by noon left the town in Allied hands and the enemy in retreat.
Richmond July 1h Steven Baptist was hanged yesterday at Boydrop Mecklenburg county. He murdered Peter Jones, an aged citizen, by waylaying him and clubbing him to death. His trial occurred under military protection after his confession several days earlier.
Allentown resident Edward W. Trexler 73 a retired lumber dealer died in an auto crash yesterday when struck by a Philadelphia and Reading freight train while driving in Allentown.
New York reports a conspiratorial plot to kill President McKinley by Spanish and Cuban groups with New York headquarters. In Cythiana Kentucky on July 11 a notable farmer William Morgan was killed by his brother in law Jack Whalen with an ax in a harvest field. Whalen, described as weak minded yet not previously violent, was captured and sent to the Lexington asylum.
Accra reports Sir Frederic Mitchell Hodgson governor of the Gold Coast colony and his wife reached Cape Coast Castle yesterday with the main party arriving today as their voyage concluded.
Evansville July 11 Joseph Logan a West Franklin Posey county farmer shot himself in the heart citing fear of losing his voice after a neighbor struck him and a pipestem was forced down his throat. He preferred quietus to a life in silence.
Andrew Bell a 48 year old teamster at home in Anderson Ind attempted suicide by morphine after returning from work. He told his wife he had taken poison and later died despite physicians initial hope. Razors found in his pocket suggest possible deranged mind.
July 11 Tipton Indiana reports substantial improvements by the Lake Erie and Western railroad. New tracks and platforms are laid, buildings repaired and painted, and more land bought to construct a new depot. Plans and specifications are completed for the project.
Greenfield Indiana July. Ira N Boyd proprietor of the Greenfield creamery was caught by his clothing in a pulley while adjusting a belt. He was standing on a ladder with shafting 12 feet high. The engine was stopped quickly. he was rescued and carried to safety. He remained conscious suffering two broken ribs and serious bruises but not dangerous injuries.
Smith B. Dumont of Rising Sun Indiana died in Grenfell Australia at age 75. A Mexican War veteran, he joined as a colorbearer and received a handsome tag from friends. The flag remained with him after discharge and covered his casket at burial in Australia.
Shelbyville July 11 ex commissioner William Amos was arrested on three grand jury indictments charging presenting false claims against the county conspiracy to procure false claims and knowingly presenting false claims. Amos resigned last spring amid charges of malfeasance and misfeasance in office.
In Alexandria Indiana on July 11 the Heritage farm oil well once yielding about 1000 barrels daily has halted production temporarily after William Hughes drilled a well within 30 feet. The shot caused Heritage to lose flow and a sale of his farm for 25000 dollars may collapse as a result.
