Quincy Illinois January 29 police killed two expert safe blowers believed from Chicago after a running hotel pursuit. A third man was wounded in a stairway shootout and captured. Officers found burglar tools skeleton keys dynamite and nitroglycerin on the trio. The men were linked to prior Doyle County Building and Loan safe raid and a Slukert robbery in Omaha.
The Southern Naval Stores company applies to the superior court for a charter with capital of 300 000 and option to grow to 2 000 000. Plan to bring turpentine producers from Georgia Alabama and Florida into the firm with main office in Savannah and branches in New York and Jacksonville. An earlier attempt to form a naval stores factors combine is noted.
General Buller reports Warren's troops retreated south of the Tugela. Boers claim 1,500 British dead and 150 surrendered at Spionkop. Buller cites water shortage and heavy fire as reasons for abandoning Spionkop, with a withdrawn force to the Tugela southward.

Oliver Petty aged 20 and two companions roamed near Decatur when they disturbed Samuel Spalding. A gunshot struck Petty in the breast and head, tearing his face and leaving him blinded. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
In Terre Haute Indiana Dr Jabez Casto and three clerks are jailed on arson charges after a planned fire at Casto’s drug store. Investigators found oil soaked materials a stairway fuse dynamite charges and loaded gas and fuel plans intended to kill many occupants including sleeping workers and relatives.
A hotel guest in Indianapolis found a letter addressed to Senator H T Johnson of Dunkirk in a room drawer. The letter contained a check for 59.44 drawn on the First National Bank of Dunkirk. The check was forwarded to Johnson, who did not report a loss.
Greenfield Indiana January 20 the pot house of the window glass factory and its contents burned yesterday afternoon. The factory first erected by R Wells caught fire several times but workers and city fire department saved the main buildings. Loss is 85000. Both factories belong to the American Window Glass Company and operations will continue as pots are stored in another building.
Shelbyville Indiana reports heated interest in a grand jury probe into Ghetty County. Witnesses include James Spellman, former county asylum superintendent, who testifies that George Ray demanded hogs and a turkey behind the scenes, with money offered for Spellman’s continued tenure.
A house fire in Muncie Indiana killed Mrs Stephens and a Miller grandchild who were fatally injured or suffocated while Frank Stephens and the Miller family escaped. William Miller and others were reportedly inside the home when the flames broke out and the roof collapsed.
Julia Loser, daughter of farmer Jacob Loser near Decatur Indiana, was bitten when a vicious horse jerked its head and pulled her hand through a strap hole, pinning it. the animal then gnawed the hand until help arrived. Enameling works in Kokomo damaged by fire. $4,500 loss and sixty workers laid off.
In Owensville a secondary blast from nitroglycerin left after a bank robbery hurls workmen but causes no serious injury. Albany Indiana January 20 fire destroyed the Hoosier furniture manufacturing plant in this city Saturday. Fire officials reported extensive damage with the entire facility engulfed and losses not yet estimated.

Fourth Assistant Postmaster General Bristow and inspector Cochrane will lead the effort with King of New York and Forness of Philadelphia.
