In Indianapolis on January 22 the United Mine Workers kept a largely secret meeting to discuss wage scales ahead of a joint conference with operators. Open session actions included opposing a sympathy resolution for the silver theory of 161, and adopting measures to monitor Congressional voting on labor issues. A motion to enforce boycott-style purchasing was amended to drop the clause. The group urged releasing Alexander Burtman, sentenced to 22 years for the Homestead riot. A night vote named top vice presidential contenders with a second ballot to follow. A tax to fund a Southwest strike and efforts to force a conference with operators in the hard coal district were approved. Lulu Brown seventeen year old daughter of Rev Charles H Brown of Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church died after an oil stove toppled and spilled burning oil. Rev Brown, attempting to smother the flames, suffered burns to hands and face. Lulu had long been an invalid and had previously suffered saturnine attacks. The family has served pastorates in Sheldon Monroeville Peru Warsaw Spokane Newcastle and Elkhart among others.
William Sabinski died in Germany twenty years ago with a will directing $20,000 be placed with the Catholic church to be given to the first male descendant born in the Catholic faith. On Saturday Chesterton mother Mrs abin aki learned her infant son stands to inherit nearly $30,000. Shelbyville Indiana January 22 ex county treasurer Wilson and ex sheriff McDougal were arrested on indictments. Wilson faces a charge of presenting a false claim for services for copying records approved for 737.57. McDougal is charged with a claim for alleged detective service totaling 228.25. Both bonds set at 2000 by Judge Morrie.
The Taylor Lumber Company suffered total loss as fruitneries machinery and outbuildings burned. Estimated damage stands at fifty thousand dollars.
