Drainage Canal Opens Flood into Desplaines River
In Joliet Lockport Ills on January 18 the drainage canal dam was lowered with governor Tanner's approval and 200000 cubic feet of water per minute surged into the Desplaines river en route to the Gulf of Mexico. A night vigil by trustees and canal commissioners secured the permit. The dam release produced a green water surge and later 900000 cubic feet per minute poured away downstream. The flow carried scarcely any odor but was loud and powerful.
