Washington December 13 Senator Stewart introduces a bill to raise salaries for top offices. The president would earn 100000 annually the vice president and speaker 20000 and each senator representative and delegate 10000 with the changes taking effect March 4 1995.
Washington December 13 The Senate debated pure food and Philippines government bills with discussion touching on the protection of Americans from impure foods and on guaranteeing bond interest for Philippine railroads. Mr Newlands proposed Philippine railroad construction by the government. Debate cited Judge Parker's views, and Mr Bryan’s utterances were quoted. A number of local bills passed and a quorum prevented action on a joint resolution for the Washington Monument exhibit. The forest reserves transfer to the agriculture department was approved.
The Senate privileges committee renewed its Smoot inquiry with Rev J M Buckley of the Christian Advocate testifying about a Salt Lake City Mormon meeting where Joseph Smith allegedly proclaimed he would not give up plural wives. Dr Leroy S Chadwick of Cleveland Ohio says he will explain his relations with Mrs Cassie L Chadwick on his return to the United States He notes nothing about her real estate and will not discuss her personal means He plans to sail home within a week or ten days while avoiding lawyers and public activity in Paris.

Fire in Bedford Indiana reduces a house owned by a man named Bullet to ashes. Two young children left inside barely escaped cremation, nearly unconscious from smoke before they were rescued. Insurance covers the loss.

In Laporte Indiana on December 13 Henry Cummins livery barn at Union Mills burned, seven horses and thirteen cattle died. It was the sixth nearby incendiary fire in months, with alarms raised by Edward Schaefer a 39 year old farm laborer who had been suspected and arrested.
C W Price a well to do carpenter was shot twice and killed by his brother in law Reece Carr in Moundsville West Virginia as a result of a family quarrel. Price was with his wife and three small children when the shooting occurred. Carr is still at large.
London artist Abraham Solomon painted Waiting For the Verdict exhibited at the Royal Academy. Landseer, admiring the scene, joked that Solomon appeared in full glory but without the Royal Academician title, noting the RA hung works as usual on the line.
