In Homestead Pennsylvania 75 destitute cases have been reported to the relief committee after the strike. A severe winter is expected to increase those in need as merchants report many workers refused at the mill and fear they cannot carry them on accounts. Outside aid is anticipated but fundraising lags the committee’s hopes.
In Chicago Chief Ramsay of the Order of Railway Telegraphers says Rock Island operators are on strike despite denials. At Council Bluffs division, dispatchers control east and westbound traffic while yard offices close and most yard operators join the strike. The road faces widespread disruption as a small number of operators remain and the company plans replacements.
In Indiana across the river at Iinvis the McCleary and Potter families clash over cordwood. Bates Potter badly wounds David McCleary with an ax handle. a McCleary brother fires a shotgun at Potter, another Potter ally uses a breechloader. a fusillade follows with McCleary shot in the face and Potter likely mortally wounded. In New York Emma Van Norden joins the Salvation Army. In Ohio a quarrel between James McGrath and George Jameson ends with Jameson dead from a blow to the head.
The Dec 10 Chicago ruling by Judge Gresham declared the Interstate Commerce Commission cannot force railroads to testify against themselves. Commissioners call it a mortal blow and congress debates abolition or reorganization as a court like entity. Justice Department says prosecutions under the Sherman Act will be greatly hindered.
Florian Waldeck a cashier who fled with a $35,000 shortage was captured in an immigrant crowd after disguising himself as a laborer. A detective spotted his pale hand and nabbed him as he raised his head, ending the escape bid in San Francisco.

Alpena South Dakota residents seized thirty tons to aid locals as factories face shutdown risk without relief.
Fire was discovered in the air shaft of the Little Coal company's Primrose colliery near Minersville. A gang of men were lowered into the mine and dispersed to work when flames sparked near the shaft foot. Authorities contained the fire quickly, recalling a prior April flood that drowned ten miners.
Austin Corbin, president of the Long Island railroad, says preliminary steps are under way to tunnel from Flat Bush Avenue, Brooklyn to Jersey City. He predicts the East River tunnel will be built soon and calls the project among the era’s most important rapid transit efforts. The line would shorten Brooklyn to Jersey City travel to ten minutes and Brooklyn to City Hall to six or seven minutes, spanning about four miles and uniting regions across two rivers.
A discharged Camden mines worker in Mason county West Virginia started a blaze at the company electric light plant causing 15000 from costly machinery and buildings to be wrecked. He is also accused of burning the company stables last week endangering fifty horses and mules. General Spilman says the firm will not rebuild at the site.
