Lawrenceburg Indiana August 28 An ex convict Charles J Grassity fought in a drunken melee and slashed Joseph E Cross seven times with a razor. Doctors closed the wounds with fifty six stitches and Cross remained in serious condition. Grassity who has spent twenty two years in prison fled the scene into Kentucky.

Edward C Toner named Progressive candidate for Congress in Indiana eighth district. Guarda mayor in Portugal jailed by mob after attacker is captured and killed. British War Office rejects rifles for Citizen Volunteers of Ireland. Roosevelt factions in Pennsylvania to withdraw electors if Penrose ticket opposition is dropped.
Hitchcock says the Sunday mail ban targets the general public and clerk work. mail will go to lock boxes for newspapers hotel guests and other affected addressees. Emergency mail remains allowed. Petersburg Indiana on August 28 Frank Parker owner of the Parker restaurant fired sixteen rounds from an automatic gun at a masked burglar attempting a bakery break in. The thief escaped badly wounded in the confusion.

In Gary Indiana on August 28 Luss Esther Smith narrowly escaped death when a motorcycle with Roy Roberts ignited gasoline from a leaking tank. Smith sat on the tank and her clothing caught fire. Roberts’ clothing also scorched. Interurban car passengers helped extinguish the flames and both were taken home.
Well No 3 on the Losch farm in Pike township has started pumping with an initial output of forty barrels a day. Two other wells on the same lease are performing well and confidence grows in the new field. Preparations are underway to sink a fourth well.
