Port Disaster at Montevideo Harbor

The Argentine excursion steamer Colombia and the North German Lloyd steamer Schlesein collided in a rainstorm at Montevideo harbor entrance. The Colombia sank quickly with 150 to 200 people dead or drowned, many of them women and children. About seventy survivors were rescued as the wreck obstructed the channel and the Uruguayan fetes were postponed.

Monroe Negro Went on Rampage With Shotgun in Monroe

In Monroe on August 25 Willam S Wade a Black man attacked the main business street firing a double barreled shotgun at whites and objects. Police returned fire and Wade was killed by a heart shot. Twenty nine people were wounded including a police officer a deputy sheriff a Tuskegee merchant and several others. Wade crossed from Pine Bluff Ark with companions seeking trouble. Wade’s body was publicly burned after being hung for over half an hour.
