Victoria August 20 A pilot aboard the steamer Eslander testifies the night was clear but dark with wind and no ice as the vessel struck a fatal berg. Crew scrambled lifeboats after engines stopped, passengers jumped with life preservers, and some trapped or clung to wreckage while a passenger hid gold before abandoning it to safety.

Paducah Kentucky August 20 The steam er City of Golconda en route to Paducah from Elizabethtown Illinois was struck by a sudden squall and sunk in 10 feet of water six miles above the city. Sixteen are reported drowned with 75 aboard. Captain Otto Bauer of Golconda owns the boat which valued at about $10000. Captain Jesse Baver and Pilot E B Peck were the last to leave and swam to shore saving several. The number of dead could not be confirmed until records are found.
In Pensacola Aug 20 fear grows that the Russian bark Neptune under Captain Zetrkod sailing from here Aug 10 to Montevideo is lost after a storm. Pieces of a vessel stern bearing the name Neptune were found on the outer beach of Santa Rosa Island several miles away yesterday.
Richmond Va August 20 fire leveled the J Wright company plant of the American cigar company injuring no one. About 400000 pounds of leaf tobacco and related merchandise were in the building valued at about 115000 dollars.

Logansport Indiana August 20 two youths named Sample and Batchelor after entering the camp along the Eel river near Adamsboro found a river bed rich in mussel shells. They opened several and unearthed pearls of exceptional size and luster. The gems were sent to Smith and Flynn jewelers and then forwarded to New York for examination. The discovery has sparked excitement and the pair refuse to disclose the bed location while awaiting expert results.
In New Harmony Indiana August, Ash resting by White River hooked a large catfish. As he pulled the fish from the water a horn pierced his foot. He ignored the wound until swelling appeared and a physician diagnosed an acute blood poisoning with poor recovery prospects.

With this seizure the government has charged 40 cases of silk weighing 10 000 pounds valued at more than 4000. The duty on the silks already seized will exceed 3000 and under pre fraud methods the importers would have paid only 0 000 on the lot.
Washington August 20 The Columbia Typographical Union of this city adopts a resolution pledging financial and moral assistance to striking steel workers. A 8.0 percent weekly assessment on printers earning 500 dollars per month or more will pass at the next meeting, likely raising about 1500 dollars monthly.

At the Atlantic Oil Refining plant firemen battled a blaze when a giant benzine tank exploded. Four firemen were killed and many injured before they could be rescued during the morning incident.
