No official word from Valparaiso or Chile reached Washington, while rumors of casualties and damage circulate among anxious friends and relatives. In Virginia, fifty men are trapped in the Clinch Mountain tunnel at Clinchport after a cave-in, with air pumped in and rescue teams racing to reach them.
Kokomo Indiana August 18 Judge Roll M Cooper city court head has appealed to Governor Hanly to lift a boycott by the Metropolitan Police Board that has kept his docket idle for a month Cooper criticized the board for using plain clothes detectives to spy on saloon keepers and gamblers and for obtaining arrests which he then overturned in court The board ordered detectives not to file further charges in his court leaving city cases to a local justice court and leaving Prosecutor Voorhis aligned with the police board
Expert accountants auditing C. E. Meyer city treasurer’s accounts for nearly two years report a short of $6 342 in street improvement assessments. Controller H C Vandeuren and taxpayers' committee notified bondsmen and demanded Meyer repay the amount. Meyer denies liability and asks for an itemized statement.
Amid frantic trading on the New York stock exchange Union Pacific common stock jumped 17 percent and Southern Pacific rose 67 points after a dividend news surprise. Many who sold short incurred large losses with profits estimated at 15 million dollars in Union Pacific and 10 million in Southern Pacific.

Oliver Gray of Company C Twenty eighth Infantry Ft. Snelling Minn. currently at Ft. Benjamin Harrison drowned while swimming in Fall creek about one mile north of the camp. He dived from a high embankment into three feet of water, possibly breaking his neck, and disappeared after rising briefly.
The Republican Congressional Convention for the Third District will meet at New Albany at 1 pm on Thursday August 28 1906 to nominate a candidate for congress. Apportionment by counties lists Deerees Duboie Orange Petry Washington and Beott with varying counts.
Valparaiso Ind Aug 18 The 25th annual commencement at Valparaiso University drew 2500 attendees. President Brown conferred degrees on the class, one of the largest in school history, as 1105 graduates completed study across departments and enrollment exceeded 4300.
Washington August 16 department of justice through Acting Attorney General Robb ruled that Mexican workers hired for railroad construction in Texas are unskilled laborers under the law. The decision, urged by the department of commerce and labor, clarifies eligibility and admission for such laborers.
Fire gutted part of the Hvery and undertaking establishment owned by A. F. Earl in Michigan City. It started in the hay loft with twenty five tons of hay, burned three hours as the fire department fought it. Sixty horses were saved and more than a hundred vehicles removed. Loss set at 5000 dollars with no insurance.
Everett Lowery of Cadiz who traveled to Newcastle to receive the Bundy madstone for a dog bite believed to be rabid has returned home. The madstone adhered for 175 hours and swelling has subsided with the procedure.

May Graver of Orleans returns after writing Grace Baird at Keet Thirteenth Street. Joseph T McLaren and Dore Loaden to wed August 26 at the bride’s home in Moberly Harrison County. Mr and Mrs J H Ashabranner return from Atlantic Oleg, Philadelphia and New York.
