Old Reliable Jackson pension agency offers to handle presentes claims in several bureaus of the Interior and Treasury. Claims settled promptly with no fee without pension. Promises straight goods and in-person service, warning against incompetent parties. Correspondence solicited at the listed address.
Auditor's Office in New Albany Indiana on July 1 lists each township's white and colored male citizens over 21. Totals show 6,756 white and 510 colored, grand total 7,206, with public access for error checks.

The Terre Haute Express reports the death of Mrs. Frank Gwin of South Seventh street who passed away at 2 p m yesterday. A former Second ward school teacher, she was beloved by colleagues and students. She leaves husband Frank Gwin a newborn child and parents Carbee and a brother William Carbee and sister Mrs Reuben Butz. The obituary notes Mr Gwin's revenue work and her notable character.
In Magistrate Richards' court Albert Lewis was fined 11.50 for assault and battery on John Woods and released after staying the fine. In Woods v Lewis for provocation a separate 11.50 fine was assessed. Lewis was remanded in default of payment.
London reports military observers note smokeless powder emits less smoke and significantly reduces gunfire noise at Spandau maneuvers while keeping higher costs. Emperors watch as precision and mobility improve on the smokeless side.
Mr. Stewart of Glasgow writes that James Maybrick died from habitual arsenic use taken as a desideratum. He was ready to testify at Mrs. Maybrick’s trial, and is the witness whose evidence she says was suppressed. The London Lancet reviews the case and upholds the verdict.
At RicoMono on August 15 the Democratic state convention nominated McKinney by acclamation after a second ballot failed to unite anti McKinney forces. The platform supports Gov. Lees administration, opposes debt expansion, backs public schools, promotes immigration for agriculture, and favors oyster industry growth. It also endorses the national Democratic platform and calls for tobacco and fruit tax abolition. In Preferspura, the Republican city convention chose twelve delegates including Mahone and Bolling for the state convention in Norfolk on the 22nd.
The convention adopted a resolution declaring it the unanimous sense to nominate Gen Mahone for governor of the Commonwealth. It is believed the anti Mahonites will not elect delegates.
The Republican state committee agreed to hold its state convention in Saratoga on September 25. The decision frames the party’s preparatory timeline as delegates gather for the event in upstate New York.
In San Francisco Justice Field resumes circuit court work with Judges Sawyer and Brewer while under marshal protection. About 100 men paraded as Odd Fellows from Salem Greenville and Galena attended the first anniversary reception of Silver Valley Lodge No. 645 at New Providence. Pekin band played while P G A W Bentley No. 10 P G Rep James Pierce No. 1 and P G Rep T G Beharrell spoke. Visitors praised home lodge and Jesse E. McKinley for hospitality.
William Benson, condemned for murder in Floyd County, has his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment by Governor Alvin P. Hovey. The decision, reached after days of consideration, was delivered by W.B. Roberts to Benson in the state prison. Benson accepted the outcome, expressing intent to lead a godly life, while Benson's mother said she was glad and had expected the mercy. The news surprised some locals but was anticipated by others.
Judge Ferguson writes Gov Hovey detailing the Benson case and notes a death sentence for William Benson. He portrays Benson as a young, ignorant farmhand with little capacity for thought, urges executive consideration within legal bounds, and cites a firm court ruling on mental state.

William Miller of this city lost the third finger of his left hand at the Ohio Falls Car Works in Jeffersonville when his finger was caught in machinery during operation this morning.
