George H. Hester announces candidacy for the Republican nomination for Congress in the Third district, pending the decision of the Republican district convention. Horace L. Weissinizer announces himself as the Republican nominee for the General Assembly seat from Floyd County.
About 15,000 veterans formed a two mile parade line through Minneapolis as 2 Miles long march and citywide reunions marked the Grand Army of the Republic encampment. Receipts hosted by Ladies of the Grand Army and others, with campfire and speeches by Governor Johnson and others.
Testimony shows extensive flight preparations by President Stensland with a woman enlisted by Assistant State's Attorney Olson via cross examination of Ellen McCracken housekeeper. Stensland packed bedding, curtains, carpets, a silver dinner set, and a heavy three foot high trunk bound with iron, traced to Baraboo Wisconsin, weighing 375 pounds when loaded for shipment. detectives sought the large trunk worldwide by telegrams.

In the Ogaden conflict the Mad Mullah attacked the sultan of Misertain territory with nineteen villages involved. Both sides suffered heavy losses as the sultan’s nine close relatives and about 700 warriors died before the Mollah was pushed toward Illig and the coast. Aden reports the setback occurred on the fifteenth with devastation noted.
Leavenworth Kan Aug 15 Secretary of War Taft has declined clemency for Sidney Burbank a former first lieutenant in the United States Army now serving a sentence of six months at a federal prison. He was dismissed for embezzlement and mistreatment of his Filipino wives.
Hermann Ridder of New York reports a second audience with Emperor William who shows keen interest in the United States. The Emperor desires good will and friendship between nations and would like to visit the United States to meet the people and President Roosevelt.
In Paris August 15 the pope’s encyclical to French archbishops and bishops prompts wide debate on church state separation. Clergy report obedience while many fear religious strife as the law's practical enforcement falters and church operations face disruption. Negotiations with the government appear unlikely.
In Brownsville Texas on August 15 black federal troops from Fort Brown fired on Main Street after anger over a raid to locate a suspected negro assailant. Bartender Frank Nats died from a Krag Jorgensen shot. Corporal Domingo wounded. home and hotel windows shattered. Governor asked to remove troops to quell the unrest.
In Marietta I T Aug 15 unknown assailants shot Ben Steward in an ambush avenging Dr Graham of Hollier I T who was killed about a month earlier by Steward. Cal Steward, brother of the dead man, chased the fleeing assassins on horseback pursuing them at pace.
National League game at Pittsburg saw Boston lose 4 to 0. American League clash in Cleveland ended with Washington 8 and Cleveland 9.
Rio de Janeiro reports the cut committee of the International American conference on the Drago do crine approved a broad resolution. It recommends each American nation may invest The Hegue tribunal to study forcible public debt collection and other pecuniary claims. The opinion predicts unanimous acceptance and adoption by the conference.
Bloomington Indiana August 15 John R East a renowned attorney and Democratic political figure in southern Indiana died at his home after a long illness caused by Brights disease His passing follows months of illness and his death was announced as nearby Democrats prepare to name a state ticket in Dallas today
The Rev. J. O. Warren of Gearon Baptist Church Belair Georgia praises a medicine called Betton Biscrete Bitseres claiming it cured his lame back stiff joints and restored walking after a long physical collapse. He endorses the product as a God sent aid to mankind.
At Hobart Indiana on August 15 two gunmen attempted a night robbery at the Pennsylvania station. Ralph Buckman the agent extinguished the lamp, summoned police, and a running fight led to the capture of one robber identified as Henry Rochean. The other escaped.
William B. Andrews alias C. C. Williams was nabbed by Miss Margaret Loftus as he tried to board a Chicago bound train. She held him until Officer Derrant arrived. He allegedly swindled Loftus out of $500 by promising a California stenographer job at $60 a month to cover transportation and a typewriter.
Crawfordsville Ind Aug 15 Dr W P Kane president of Wabash College will return to his college duties at the start of the fall term following a period of severe illness. Doctors once feared he could not resume active work for a year but his condition has improved greatly with rest and he now walks on campus and takes daily drives.
Ed DeFor ate died in Kentland Indiana while stripping a grain elevator at Foreman Little Town. He worked 70 to 80 feet up when a corrugated iron sheet ripped from his grasp causing the scaffold rope to sever and he fell to the ground dying instantly.
A Big Four freight wrecked at the eastern edge of Winchester Indiana on August 15. Seven cars derailed five burned. A draw bar failure caused the collision. Train speed was about forty miles an hour. Cars carried crude oil sugar and electric light appliances. No injuries reported.
A Louisville and Nashville freight train en route from Birmingham to Decatur is halted by a armed Black man who forced trainmen to follow his orders from Newcastle to Decatur. The hijacker was captured in Decatur with help from five men after diverting the train into a shop yard.
The Aug 15 report says since the July 19 blaze, ninety eight people are missing and likely perished. Seven suspects of incendiarism were killed during the fire.
