Samuel R. VanSant former Minnesota governor was elected commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic by 587 to 156 over Judge William A. Ketcham Indiana. Jennie L. Berry won the national presidency of the Woman's Relief Corps after three ballots. Officer slate includes William Boestaph Ogden Utah and Alfred Beers Bristol Conn. Nevius noted 1907 and 1908 figures on members on pension rolls. Civil War survivors and pension costs are cited with 162 million dollars appropriated for the year.
