London August 10 The Hotel Carlton, a social hub, burned last night gutting three stories and flooding the rest. Among the victims is American actor Jameson Lee Finney whose body was found charred on the sixth floor. Numerous rescues occurred as guests and notables escaped with little.
The French steamer Emir sank five miles east of Tarifa after colliding with the British steamer Silverton in heavy fog. Ninety-three people drowned, including sixty nine passengers and twenty four crew, all French. Twenty seven Emir survivors were rescued by the Silverton, which returned to port with a damaged bow and flooded forepeak.
Governor Deneen and state officials work with the board of administration and charitable institutions to finalize plans for a new building authorized by the General Assembly. They seek to avoid extra taxes by spreading costs over two fiscal years and set a committee to determine which project happens first.

Harry Blanche, 20, dies after falling from a train near Saratoga while press-begging for fares.
Elmer E. Burlingame and George H. Cove face charges of using the mails to defraud in soliciting stock for the Sun Electric Generator company also tied to 700 agents. Investigators note links to several Burlingame ventures including Rocky Mountain Tunnel and Pittsburg Gold Dredging, with operations centered in New York and Jersey City.

American Association reported Minneapolis 7 Kansas City 6 and Columbus 6 Indianapolis 2 with St Paul 2 Milwaukee 0 and Toledo 4 Louisville 2.
In New York on August 10, Mrs. Oscar A. Turner said she would travel to a western state to file for divorce once a satisfactory financial settlement is arranged. Turner is the Ely Copper Company president and a prominent New York politician's daughter is involved as the proposed soul mate.
Two Syracuse boys were found dead on a train car as it pulled into Grand Central station. Police believe they were killed when the train entered the tunnel near New Hamburg.
Indianapolis, Aug 10. State, county and township assessors indicate the general fund will show a margin of about $100,000 for the two year appropriation period starting Oct 1. No transfer of the debt sinking fund is needed this year. Real estate appraisals drop by about $151 million versus the next year, with personal property also down though less than real estate. Total net appraised property value for taxation is $1,901,223,241, excluding $58,395,079 in mortgage exemptions.
Dan R. Sherwood, a local farmer near Mitchell, was arrested by food inspector A. W. Bruner after attempting to sell bad eggs. He brought ninety six dozen eggs to a poultry house that refused purchase, then tried a grocer. Candling showed six good and ninety dozen bad eggs, many moldy.
N T Burroughs, Chicago millionaire, buys 4480 acres from Tuesberg Land Co in Laporte and Starke counties for 204000 dollars. The land, mostly drained Kanakee river swamp, was bought for 18 dollars per acre nine years ago and was largely unused before cultivation began.
In Lafayette Indiana on August 10 the Knights of Pythias encampment featured a jubilee meeting at the Victoria theater. The Page rank conferring, first degree of Pythianism, was conducted by local lodges with Grand Chancellor John F. Petri presiding.
In Anderson Indiana on August 10 James Graves forty one shot and killed his wife Rosa Graves thirty eight and then killed himself in the same room authorities reported.
Lebanon Ind Aug 10 S N Cragan editor of the Lebanon Patriot and Walter Hodge were riding when the auto left the road and struck a hedge fence one mile east of the city. Both were painfully injured. no word on their condition.
South Bend Indiana August 10 Judge Funk of the circuit court is expected to rule today in the injunction suit brought by J M Chillas to block the county commissioners from purchasing voting machines.
Terre Haute Indiana August 10 Austin McCammon twenty one of Shelburn pleaded guilty to attacking a thirteen year old girl. A brother of McCammon was sent to prison for life for attacking two little girls.
New Castle Indiana August 10 A widow Cynthia Ray aged seventy three killed herself after a grandchild moved a board from the front yard where she had placed it.
