The Fort Worth and Denver mail train was held up by six masked men at 2 am between Cheyenne and Lascosa, about 375 miles from Fort Worth. The express car was forced open after the engineer pulled the locomotive ahead. Messenger Marsh had concealed the express packages and extinguished the lights. a revolver was used to compel him to open the door. Three suspects remained at large as the incident unfolded.
On a Wabash train leaving Union Depot at 8:20 PM two robbers in masks looted a St. Paul sleeper, taking about $175 and two watches before fleeing toward a dirt road. Conductor Roach, struck and blinded, fired a shot but escaped injury as the train roared along at 25 miles per hour.
Chief Hubbard announced he would not leave with Burke to deter crowding at the depot. Burke, lawyers, reporters and officers traveled by Manitoba road to St Paul. Burke relocated to a Pullman car, secured from public view, as Chicago reporters rode ordinary coaches.
The schooner Black Diamond arrived in Victoria from Behring sea with its guns, ammunition, seal and salt bags seized by the US revenue cutter Rush on July 11. John Hawkins, an American seaman, was placed in charge and told not to interfere with the sailing-master. Hawkins suggested docking at Sitka or Victoria, but no reply was recorded. The collector of customs and locals believe the Rush aimed to remove the vessel from the islands to halt seal destruction. Hawkins has informed the American Consul, who has notified Washington.
In Philadelphia on August 4, Louisville defeated the Athletics 7 to 0. Ewing pitched brilliantly for the Colonels, allowing only three hits off McMahon. Both defenses played well, but Louisville struck early and often against McMahon and McMahon and Robinson and Vaughn.

William Ackley, a puddler, was struck with a beer glass by Henry Kelly at Kelly's West Main Street saloon after being asked to leave. Ackley lay unconscious, reported dying then denied, with his condition described as precarious and critical. Kelly was held on bond in Magistrate Richards' court as doctors examined the wounds.
John Heaton aged sixty two, a trusted convict at the Indiana penitentiary in Jeffersonville, escaped yesterday morning from the prison stable. Heaton, a stepfather of William Benson who is to hang August 16, was sent from Rockport Spencers County four months ago for stealing a set of stone mason’s tools.

Bridget Connelly, employed as housekeeper at Dr. Clapp's Main Street residence, died yesterday morning at the Hospital for the Insane in Indianapolis. She was fifty five and a relative of Miles Kehoe, whose home will receive the remains upon arrival.
In circuit court this morning William Briggs filed suit against Jacob Blume and others to quiet a title and for 300 dollars damages. John O. Greene filed an action against William E. and Mary E. Swift on a foreclosure of a mortgage with 800 dollars requested as judgment.
Philip Kraus of Jeffersonville was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly attempting to outrage Henrietta Young, age nine. He was taken into custody Saturday evening and brought here for examination tomorrow morning.
