Floyd county taxpayers face a heated dispute over county and city spending. Figures from the county auditor show salaries of county officers totaling $561,582 for last year, with criticism of advertised expenses and the poor farm. The piece rails at perceived waste, condemns council crossings spending, and mocks local politics and a three headed calf exhibit at the New Albany Ledger office.
At the March term the New Albany Ledger was allowed an 18 bill for publishing a notice of Assessors. The City Printers bill for the same service was also allowed and paid, with taxpayers in Floyd County being charged. The item includes tributes to newspapers and exposes alleged overcharges, plus a Baltimore dispatch on Booth’s burial, and notes on destitution and an aged enslaved woman’s death.
The Louisville Express reports the death of George E Webster after a saddle slip caused a horse to run away near the House of Refuge. Webster, a Knight Templar officer, lingered unconscious until Sunday morning and died. His life carried a $6000 Phoenix Mutual policy. Two linked incidents are noted, including a friend who died in a steamer collision and an organist death in similar circumstances. In Greensburg Kentucky on June 23 1869 Union Republicans adopted resolutions endorsing E Rumsey Wing for State Treasurer Samuel Allen for Senator Leopold Hartfield for Legislature and backed Grant administration They criticized Democratic spending and asserted equal rights without regard to race or color The meeting led by Gen R E Hobson and S A Spencer pledged publication of the proceedings to several state papers.
A Warren County farmer named Gunekel found almost pure lead ore while plowing near a uprooted tree between Pine Village and Attica. A copper specimen also exists. The ore layer is six feet wide. depth and extent unknown. Old Indian lore mentions a near pure lead mine in the county. Further testing planned.
In Indianapolis on June 28 the Supreme Judges separated before filing their opinion on the Specific Appropriation Bill. They are expected to sustain the measure. The judges will attend the State University commencement at Bloomington today. General A. P. Hovey, U.S. minister to Peru, has arrived for a three month leave. General Terrill, Third Assistant Page of the Army, is also present on brief leave.
