Porto Plata unrest after lease of Samana bay
A Porto Plata letter reports excitement over the lease of Samana bay to Americans. Nuezi, ex governor, led a group threatening Porto Plata, was dispersed by Governor Cionzalea’s troops, and fled with his two sons to the British consul Hamburger’s private residence. Hamburger refused to surrender the fugitives, citing protection under the British flag. Gonzales ordered their seizure and they were removed to San Domingo. Hamburger protested and reportedly summoned a British warship. President Baez endorses Gonzales, and the prisoners are sent under guard from Porto Plata to San Domingo. The President sent to the Senate nominations including Joseph Fox and others for land office and related posts. Locomotives reportedly consume 30 acres of timber daily.
