In a dim tenement garret Bangs, a rag-strewn boy living with his grandmother, clings to a paper doll named Clara. A mission school teacher and aid from a light-drawn Christmas gift spark his resolve to change. He cleans up, works hard, and with Clara as his imagined companion, begins a hopeful path toward respectability. After his grandmother dies, Bangs rededicates himself to being good, aided by Miss Clara and the mission, and he grows into a steadier young man.
A despondent critique of how society, especially self-styled Christians, eagerly believes rumors against virtuous men. The piece argues that the powerful moral image invites cynicism, while accusers may themselves be debauched. Hypocrisy is exposed as the feelgood reflex.
In a Delevan House Albany parlor a political gathering, awaiting Governor Dix, drinks are poured and stories told. Nik DeFriest, invited for a tale, declines candidacy and spins a fable about a king and his philosopher, amid the evening’s jovial lobbying and speculation.
An old judge in a North Alabama town uses a constable to flog enslaved people for hire. Uncle Jake, a trusted but harsh enslaved man, is sent a note asking for thirty nine lashes and a grabbing hoe. Jake hesitates and then discovers the note’s true intent as he meets a schoolboy who asks what the note says.
A boy was sent to fetch a grubbin hoe after Jake proposed a quarter in exchange. The boy delivered a note to G, who locked the yard gate and flogged him despite the boy's innocence. Jake then boasted of the prank while the Judge later questioned if the hoe was obtained.
A long extract recounts Thomas Jefferson guiding Randolph and his bride on a delicate settlement that would limit the young couple’s resources. It quotes Jefferson urging patience and union, praising the wife’s virtues, and framing family harmony as the core aim. The narrative notes the marriage produced a lasting, influential bond in Virginia.
