Londoners face unusually cool August as temperatures drop to sixty degrees or lower and heavy rains threaten country life and sport. The piece also notes society chatter about Lord Russell’s death and political tensions over Anglican and Protestant divides.
A column of 700 men under Colonel Burroughs has returned from Koomassie after reinforcing and rationing the fort for two months. They attacked and destroyed three old stockades with a bayonet charge, wounding four officers and 34 native soldiers, with three killed. On August 7 the force surprised an Ashanti camp, bayoneting many enemies and firing on few. A lieutenant was shot and two men wounded. Rock fronts are active with other columns moving out as further punishment is anticipated.
Belleville August 11 Wim Kerr and James Mabee of Lindsay appeared before Judge Taschier charged with manslaughter in the deaths of Archibald Edmunds of Lindsay and Samuel Bard of Belleville. The case stems from a nepgi bence incident and proceeding details were heard in court.
A morning train on the Central Railway from Chipman to Norton fell 70 to 80 feet when the trestle at Sargesons Bridge collapsed. Conductor Ryan and several crew members were badly injured. John Duncan was killed and Robert Barker sustained a broken leg. The wreck left the trestle ruined and the cars shattered on the rocks below.
Owing to arrangements not being carried out by one C V A official the conference between the strikers and management was not held yesterday but will be held today. Mr Hardy and Secretary Carmichael will represent the men of the allied orders while Manager Whyte and Messrs Oborne Orde and Cross will represent the railway company.
F. X. Choquette, a Montreal police magistrate, was appointed by the Attorney General to hear complaints from Chicoutint’s municipal council against advocate Beeley. Beeley is charged with unlawful interference in voting on a bylaw allowing a $25,000 street-improvement plan. He allegedly destroyed votes and escaped with the valuation book.
William Palmer Cadet Hamilton and Cadet Nickland of Ottawa and Kingston Military College graduates have been commissioned in the British Army in India and will depart for that country on Wednesday.
The Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows elected officers. Grand Master is G. L. Lewis of Chatham. Deputy Grand is C. C. Lyman of Brockville. Grand Secretary is J. B. King of Toronto. Grand Treasurer is W. J. McCormack of Toronto.
Woodstock Ontario August 11 Mary Elstone represented by John Soper McKay a widow aged 74 sues George King Hickson for damages over a breach of promise claim. The suit follows her claim that he was her sole suitor and one of the wealthiest men in the area.
About 80 year old farmers, and a planned marriage broken by the influence of the King's family. The would be bride, a wealthy widow, sued for damages after learning she had been jilted.
Victoria news reports the government will not grant more Yukon railway charters until the boundary issue is settled to protect Canadian roads and curb U S town growth. Judge Martin will depart for Atlin for Assize Court on August 2 with a commission to address Porcupine staking disputes and cross border claim conflicts. McBride and others will visit Steveston to inspect canning, militia, and strike matters.
Gorwin Smith broke his left wrist yesterday afternoon at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club house on the Island. He slipped on the steps to the verandah, received medical care from Dr. Pepler, was conveyed to the city by steam launch, and later treated by Drs. Bassel and Pepler who set the fracture. He is resting easily despite shock.
Messenger Charles Lane of Columbus was killed while guarding the Pennsylvania Rail Panhandle No. 1 express between Columbus and Cincinnati. The gunman killed him after taking the messenger’s revolver and the safe keys, then looted the safe. Police report a desperate, bloody struggle with a substantial sum hidden.
Laurence Rondeau of Hull dies from heart prostration at age 20. Bodies of Lee and Thomas Steers found in Lake Deschene today. Funeral for Rondeau set for tomorrow. James Ward McDonald of Carleton Place seeks divorce from Janet McDonald in next session.
Ottawa reports Captain Howard, the famed Gatling Gun defender, captured as a prisoner of war. The general commanding Bays Private W. Montieth of Strathcona's Horse was severely wounded at Arimspoort on August 7.
In Chatham Ontario on August 11 a Planet staff printer named Andrew Riddle fell from an excursion train returning from Rondeau. The incident occurred this morning and details are emerging about his injuries and condition.
A man was struck by a train losing a finger and initially unconscious. He later regained awareness in a railway ditch with a wounded hand and noted someone had bandied it. He then walked six miles to Blenheim and reached Chat ham.
In San Francisco on August 11 Mrs Net tie Craven again loses her claim to the late Senator J G Bair estate. Judge Trout rules she is not his widow and rejects an alleged will and deeds as forgeries, denying any allowance from the estate.
Reports from London Ontario Toronto and other cities recount a murder witness in a trial James Cassiday’s death from extreme heat and a series of accidents and disasters across the country including a bridge fall railway accident and a schooner wreck with several lives affected and preserved by insurance and relief efforts. Mary Mc Farland testified in a murder case while heat waves closed factories and caused fatalities and suspensions of work.
London observers discuss Russia's permission for Degiers to depart Pekin with staff under Chinese guarantee. A St Petersburg report says Russia intends to fill Manchuria with troops and not surrender the territory. Allies in Pei Chi Li total about 8 000 with 114 guns. by Aug 30th expected to reach 78,000 with 210 guns.
A State Department release describes a consular telegram from August 10 reporting the legations under siege by imperial troops. It cites sixty killed and one hundred wounded with some sickness but generally good health among staff, who intend to hold on indefinitely.
A Shanghai despatch reports the British Consul General calling troop landings a precautionary measure as disturbances spread toward Shanghai. He notes Klang Su is in revolt and Ta Tsung has seen serious rioting.
In Washington Aug 11 the Viceroys of China led by Li Tonge Chang asked the U S to help prevent foreign troops from being landed in Shanghai. The State Department received the plea from Minister Wu, noting an agreement a month earlier granting foreign protection rights to Shanghai but arguing protection can be carried out without troops. The Viceroys claim 20 foreign forces are involved.
London reports Lord Roberts transmits Pretoria dated Aug 10 detailing a water works patrol attacked Aug 7 at Amespoort. Boer forces under Buller advanced to the north bank of the Reit spruit Aug 9 en route to Br Melo. Arrests include Marais, three field cornets, thirty Burghers and a British Natal subject named Maris.
Ruhlin, the pugilist, who was knocked out in the sixth round by Fitzsimmons last night at Madison Square Garden, was said today to be recovering from the terrible punishment of the fight. For several hours after the knockout, his condition was serious and medical aid was summoned.
Telegraphic briefs report poet George Martin died in Montreal yesterday at age 75. Also noted are fines in Ottawa for resisting police, a Russian capture announced for Kharkin on August 3, and three Cape Nome steamers bringing gold and passengers to Seattle.
Nelson public schools resume Monday at 4 am after six weeks’ vacation. Four courses from the first year high school will be offered along with regular work. Many entrants passed the exam and higher studies are expected. Miss Annie Rath replaces Miss O’Reilly. staff is set for a successful year.
