Dr. Frank Crank extols romance over knowledge and safety, urging living boldly, chasing danger, and resisting an elderly respectable world. He praises youth, fantasy, and dramatic stories like The Count of Monte Cristo, preferring vivid imagination to realism and tradition.
The Girls' Missionary Guild of St John's Reformed church hosted a prosperity social in the church social rooms with over 200 attendees. Miss Ellen Ruloff welcomed guests, followed by music from Mary Heller, Billy Gold, Alverna Langenbach, Lena Marcks and Marjorie Kleppinger. A readings segment and a playlet The First Day in School featured many members. An orchestra directed by Lena Marcks provided further music before guests enjoyed refreshments in the social hall.
John A. Miller of 7 South New Street Nazareth filed a petition with the U S Board of Tax Appeals seeking a $218 refund of income taxes assessed for 1930. Miller is represented by Harry Margolla of Bethlehem and alleges the Internal Revenue Bureau erred in computing his 1930 income.
The last meeting of the season of the local Woman's Club convened Monday in the High School. President Mrs. Happel presided as reports were read. Officers were elected for the ensuing year with Mrs. Ralph Fry as president and Mrs. G. B. Searles as vice president. Auditors named included Miss Anna Kraemer and Mrs. F. A. Marcks. Music program featured Godfrey Pretz and Dorothy Knauss among others, with a social refreshment period hosted by local members. Meanwhile the Peerless Orchestra played at a Moose Hall social linked to the Knights and Ladies of the Golden Eagle state session.
The spring session of the Allentown Conference of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania and Adjacent States of the United Lutheran Church in America met at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Coplay. Elected trustees include Russell K. Laros and Ralph H. Schatz, with several pastors chosen for executive and board roles. The Allentown District Luther League reported 1746 members across 35 senior, 8 intermediate, and 16 junior leagues. Mr. and Mrs. Knauss visited Haldeman in Butztown after Sunday.
Nazareth A A officials announce the House of David baseball troupe will perform at The Hall Diamond at 6 15 tonight. The nationally known team tours the country with long beards and flowing hair as part of their cult, drawing large crowds and offering a nearly flawless exhibition.
Tickets sold for the senior class production Green Stockings a three act comedy at the high school auditorium Tuesday May 16 at 8 pm. The cast includes Celia Faraday Colonel J N Smith relations and a lively plot about engagement and an English officer. Tickets available from the business staff Albert Schiery Hilda Kellow Maria Marx and Martha Muschinte.
April 1933 enrollment figures show 650 in junior high and 214 in senior high for all schools totaling 1178. Attendance stood at 95 percent in April and 93 percent year to date. average attendance across all schools was 1089. Substitutes filled in for absent staff. several accidents caused 24 days of lost time. Medical inspector logged 2214 hours in April. nurse Miss Kreider conducted visits, weighed 335 children, and treated minor injuries with no serious outbreaks. Athletics and finances noted, including baseball receipts and overall treasurer balances. May 16 calendar note: Senior class play at auditorium 8 PM.
On Mother's Day May 14 an NYC gathering led by Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt and top medical educators will push for safer maternity care. Emphasis covers choosing experienced doctors and high standard hospitals while noting home births can be safer with proper conditions. The Maternity Center Association cites a NYC study reducing death rates by two thirds.
The Men’s League of St John’s Reform Church Nazareth announces its annual fish dinner on Thursday May 18 at 7 PM. Proceeds include entertainment by a former grand opera singer and a prominent wit. A devotional period continues May 21 at 7:30 PM with the Men’s League attending services.
Under the will of the late Herman F. Ziegler admitted to probate in Easton the widow and two daughters are named executrices and The Nazareth National Bank and Trust Company is named trustee.
The science department presents an eight o clock program at the senior high auditorium on May 19. A physical education demonstration takes place in the gym at eight on May 26. The senior high operetta appears in the auditorium at eight on June 6. An arts exhibition runs from seven o clock in the gym on June 9.
The spring executive meeting of the Women s Missionary Society of the Allentown conference of the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania convened at St. Stephen s Church Allentown with 258 members present. Rev A W Lindenmuth led devotions and Mrs Louis C Haas presided. The afternoon included memorials to Dr Anna Kugler and Dr Lydia Woerner for hospital work in India.
The Northampton County Amateur Baseball League starts its season with a May 14 game at Tatamy against Chestnut Hill. A parade precedes the 2:30 p.m. start, Nazareth Band leads the procession, and Chief Burgess Johnson will throw the first ball. Tatamy’s lineup features Engler, Bartholemew, Jones, Singher, Young, Wessner, Ernst, and Trumbore. Chestnut Hill’s lineup is not announced.
The Knights of Friendship Chamber 109 held Ladies Night in Shafer's Hall Monday with about 150 members and guests. New candidates were proposed for membership, and a May 29 convocation meeting with grand officers was announced. The program featured America sung with augmented orchestra led by Robert Hoch, readings by Kathryn Weaver, a playlet Married to Whom by Dot Frankenfield et al, orchestra selections, group singing, square dancing, and solos by Barbara Troxell and Henrietta Werner, followed by refreshments served by a committee chaired by Stanley Woodring.
Mother's Day services planned at Haman Evangelical Church Nazareth on May 14 at 10 30 AM with Pastor W S Harris preaching on The Place and Province of our Mothers. Special music by the Bauer Family broadcasting from Allentown Radio Station and a 730 PM program featuring Guidance of Mother Love a reading by Evelyn Gangaware and a choir performance. Mrs Richline Harris to address.
Nazareth Quoit Club will open new courts at Pine and Walnut streets behind Edelman’s milk station on Monday evening May 15. They will host the Butztown Quoit Club of the Bethlem Interurban Quoit League and plan several other contests with league clubs. Robert R. Edelman invites clubs to arrange games. Nazareth Creamery is the mailing address. Visitors are welcome. the courts are among Lehigh Valley’s best, well lit for twilight outdoor play. Mr and Mrs Charles Rader visited Philadelphia over the weekend.
The regular school board meeting with all members present approved a $104,276 budget for 1933-34, fixed the tax rate at $3 per capita and 20 million property, and set commissions. Re-elected officials include W. F. Kern as treasurer and C. J. Knauss as secretary, with salaries. New hires include Miss Anne Y Long as PE health and science teacher and Miss Mabel Andrews as sewing and English teacher, amid a district payroll reduction and one fewer high school teacher due to a revised study plan.
At the May 14 vesper service a Mother's Day sermon will be given by the Pastor. The Senior Choir presents Anthem Treharne and songs "To Mother" and "Mother Of Mine" sung by Mrs. Happel and a male quartet. Organist Mr. Rohn plays five pieces including Beethoven and Bach selections.
The twenty fourth Lehigh Valley Child Helping Conference will be held at Easton Senior High School Auditorium at 12th and Northampton Streets. It starts 8 45 A M with the Easton High School Orchestra providing music. Esther Richards of Johns Hopkins University will speak, with three morning talks and no free discussion then. Luncheon round tables follow under Judge Florence E Allen and Dr de Schweinuts.
