Seventeenth Year Locusts toAppear in Parts of Pennsylvania
Entomologists warn that Brood 14 cicadas will emerge in eight Pennsylvania counties Bedford Blair Cumberland Lehigh Luzerne Montour Northumberland York Behrylki and Union and possibly nearby counties. Dr. Guyton notes these 17 year locusts will also appear in Maryland West Virginia Ohio Kentucky and Massachusetts, with future broods planned for 1944 and 1945. The last Pennsylvania appearance was 17 years ago, echoing the original 1634 outbreak. The annual cicadas differ, appearing every year in July and August. The nymphs emerge from the ground in late May or early June, molt on a tree, and die after breeding, with offspring in 1947.
