Lions Hear Blind Man Speak On Blind Work In State

The Lions club heard 8 Mervyn Sinclair of Harrisburg detail state welfare work for the blind with support from a trained German Shepherd. Anne Viakis of Bethlehem outlined Northampton county efforts to help the blind become self supporting. Guests of Lions members Lester C Hawk and William Gano attended. Ladies Night was set for June 14 at Shawnee Lake.

Town Council Adopts New Member and Municipal Actions

The Nazareth town council in regular session seated Elmer P. Wambold as the new member. Minutes from May 1 1933 were approved. Bills from many local vendors were approved for payment. Reports cited progress in highway and street work, STOP signs planned at key intersections, and curb repainting. Ordinance 193 introduced for trenching rules. rules suspended for first reading. May treasurer’s balance reported at 9,231.14 with total receipts 83,109.55. Meeting adjourned to June 1.

Lightning Hits Barn Near Bath in Severe Storm

A bolt struck a large barn on Tilghman Fogel’s farm near Bath during a Saturday evening storm at 6:30. Firefighters from Hecktown and Bath arrived too late. four hogs and several chickens perished, cattle were saved, Implements survived, and insurance coverage helped with an estimated loss near $5000.

Young Man Rescued From Drowning At Nazareth Quarry

Stephen L. Kavcak, 24, son of Mr and Mrs John Kavcak of Nazareth, nearly drowned at 3 30 am Sunday in an abandoned limestone quarry owned by Nazareth Brick Company. Swimmer fatigued after crossing the pit twice, sank while attempting a third crossing. Adolph Urban of the Nazareth Junior Life Saving Corps located his unconscious body and led resuscitation until a doctor arrived. Kavcak was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital and later discharged.

Robbery at American Stores Bath on Main Street

Thieves broke into the American Stores on Main Street Bath during Sunday night and stole the safe contents and the entire stock of cigarettes. Entrance gained via the rear warehouse with the safe moved to the warehouse and pried open. Loss amount not stated. investigators and local officials searched for clues after neighbors heard a brief noise about midnight. This marks the store’s third burglary in about twelve years with a previous incident ending with the safe found in an open field after the door was blown open by acetylene torch.

Truck crash on Dead Man's Curve kills Renn father and son

David B. Renn of Shamokin and his son Allen Renn died Friday when their beer-hauling truck crashed on Dead Man's Curve on the Easton Nazareth road. S. J. Heiney of Nazareth freed Allen from the wreck and rushed him to Easton Hospital where he died two hours later. The Renns are longtime Shamokin truckers, part of a large fleet. David was active with his father T. Jefferson Renn. He is survived by wife and three children Wickence, Jean and Carl.

Red Men Tribe Cel ebrate Anniversary at Kintnersville

Members of Pokanoket Tribe No. 178 of the I O R M observed the 61st anniversary in an informal program at Kintnersville. The Great Council of Pennsylvania sent greetings from the Great Reservation. Charter members Thomas Hoffman and George Rufe attended. County association representatives included John Kerr and William Hutchinsons. Active participants were Rev. Charles Mogel and many others, ending with a corn and venison repast.
