Navasota Club Hosts Fifth Annual July Fourth Golf Tourney
Navasota's August Horst Country Club hosts the fifth annual Invitational Golf Tournament starting Saturday July five. About 100 players compete across six flights with $500 in prizes, including Foot Joy shoes, golf bags, carts, and shirts. Medalist wins gold trophy. driving and pitching contests prize ball shaggers and balls. Sudden death tiebreakers, Horner Handicap System used. Entry fee five dollars benefits the Navasota Golfer's Building Fund. Previous champion medalist was Ed Triplett of Conroe.

Little League Games Rained Out at Navarro Park
Two Monday night games at Little League Park were cancelled due to eight inch weekend rain in Navasota. The Braves faced the Pirates and the Cardinals were to play the Giants. Coach Julius Novak said these games would be made up at season’s end if needed.

Three Tournaments Slated This Week For PTA Program
Sixteen teams, about 64 youngsters, compete for the topping pong doubles award in a school cafeteria tournament this week. Coach Julius Novak, summer recreation program director, says doubles play should finish by Friday. A horseshoe tournament is slated for Thursday, June 30, followed by a checker tourney on Friday, July 1, with more than 60 entries so far.

Night Deer Hunters Fined In Grimes County
Grimes County officers jailed three deer hunters caught at night in a driving rain. Walter R. McMagan and William Matthews of Willis and Kenneth Haynes of Houston faced the county court after midnight arrest by Game Warden Robert Lys and W. L. Church. They were fined 125.15 each for illegally hunting deer at night after being found with three deer on a farm road near Keith.

Grimes County Commissioners Court raised the county valuation from under 13 million to over 15 million dollars as part of a Board of Equalization action. Notices will go out July 11 to about 6,300 property owners with appearances scheduled July 21 22 or July 25. Father Eugene Spencer 25-Year China Missionary Dies Noted Priest
The Rev. Father Eugene Spencer, longtime Our Lady of Guadalupe Church priest on Farquhar street, served 25 years as a China missionary. Born near Plymouth Michigan in 71 years, he studied at Michigan University, Ireland ordination, and endured Pearl Harbor bombing, a Singapore POW camp year and a 1949 Communist era hardship before returning to the United States. He assumed Our Lady of Guadalupe duties on June 1.
